I have sold on ebay since `01 and never had a problem, perfect feedback, only had one refund and that was because USPS broke a glass topped print !! And now my account is restricted because I will not link a bank account !! This was a hobby for me, not income,, I have an excellent income without ebay and paypal !! Actually paypal is the problem but ebay owns it so same difference !! I even have a small self loaded credit card on file for possible overages but I can add and subtract so I have never had one !! I can`t even use the credit card on file to send money to my daughter !! Plus they want my drivers license, address verification, and something else I forgot !! Its just rediculous and stupid !! Opening another account just for ebay is too much trouble for a hobby !! Sorry ebay,, I am out !! Will look for other venues that have good sense !!

I agree that there are too many problems with Ebay and Pay Pal.

I don't have a problem with providing information. Credit card and account numbers can all be replaced if they are ever misused. You're taking a greater risk when you hand your credit card to a retail clerk making minimum wage than you are when you enter information into a secure site like Ebay, which agrees to keep your information private. Remember, your account number of your bank account has been on every single check you've ever written in your life. Just because you are entering it electronically now is not a reason for concern. The one number to safeguard is your Social Security number. That should NOT be given out except when absolutely necessary.

The problem is,, they want all of them just to prove who I am after this many years !! Have you ever went to the ebay forums and heard some of the stories ?? Paypal has way too much power over your money for me to be comfortable with them !! And even more was added recently !! I can see if they changed the rule for sellers added after a certain date, but for those that have been there 10+ years without a problem at all ??? What good is a feedback system if it does not stand for the honest sellers ?? The buyer has all the advantage with paypal,, sellers have none !! Sellers are guilty till buyer gets bored with harassing them,, and paypal backs them up without question !!

Well, I think some of that comes because sellers are the ones accepting payments. Proving you are who you say you are is just transparency, not a personal attack. Just my two cents worth on this! ;D

Well, I am not giving them a copy of my SS card or my Drivers license !! Its not just entering info, they want faxed copies !!

I do not blame you. A faxed copy of SS and DL in the wrong hands can lead to identity theft. You do not know who sees the faxes come in. Once they have all that info they can open up a charge in your name on line, get hired for an online job and more. After all if a faxed copy is OK for eBay it is OK for lots of other places too. I also get phishing disguised as Paypal all the time. They say they are closing my account for suspicious activity and want me to log into as fake account. Are you even sure it is from them?

excellent thought frogpatch!!! i also get phishing emails from both paypal and ebay all the time! i would definitely check that out, ive never been asked for that information from ebay or paypal!

I need to file a report with the BBB over a little mishap eBay pulled on me. I make a decent amount of money on there, but sometimes I want to scream with how difficult they make it to do business.

Yes,, I never open anything from email !! I was trying to send money to my daughter when she was out of town for a small purchase when I found this out !! So I logged on to paypal to use the prepaid credit card on file !! Couldn`t do it for those reasons !! I tried to send paypal an email,, couldnt do that either,,every time I clicked on anything that would assist me,, I got kicked back to the same page !! Same thing when I tried to get a phone number for paypal !!

Those mentioned outfits (peeBay & Slaypal) have fiduciary policies & user problems that I'd rather not participate in .
If I do happen upon an item on eBay that strikes my fancy , I contact the seller & arrange a payment method that does not involve any 'account' that I use .
If the seller won't accept a 'money order' (from any establishment of their choosing) , that's o.k. with me .... I just remove them from my lists of folks to do business with !
It is , however , IMO , an outlet for much nat'l/internat'l exposure for items offered up for sale , compared to many other methods ....
I often slice out the middle-men , so as to benefit both buyer & seller !

I have also used USPS money orders as payment for purchases which is simple enough !! My problem is with me as a seller !! I really have a problem giving too much info to anyone online !! But wouldn`t you think that after I went through that waiting period, prepaid all seller fees,,got feedback built up with a perfect rep. that would be enough ?? What good is a feedback system if it doesn`t stand for us as sellers !! If they want to know where I live,, write me a letter,, they have the address !! Or call,, they have that number too !! More than that,,, they can forget it !!

I think Ebay is dying fast. The fees are too high and my pieces don't get enough traffic. I have given up on Ebay. I don't even think it is a realiable research tool anymore. Not for antiques anyway. When I go there regardless if it is to see hummels or china, no one seems to be buying right now and the prices are extremely low, give away prices.

I agree but its their fault !! They are cutting their own throat !! I do check to see what, if anything, is moving !!

The German postal service just lost a movie script I sold for $300. The result? I had to refund the idiot buyer (kept trying to get me to lie on the Customs Forms about the value) his money. And I can't go back to my client and cry boohoo to her and ask not to pay it. So I'm out the money now.
...and I got bad feedback because of it. Jerks.

I was looking around yesterday and saw a few but most were membership sites and used paypal !! I will keep looking though and yell if I find something !!

Of course Craigslist is always pretty good for large items !! Easy to list,, local buyers and free !!

Yes I do use Craigslist for larger items or items that I can get more than a few dollars for. In my area I haven't had much like with posting collectibles or anything like that and Ebay has been catch as catch can. Even then there is usually 1 or 2 people looking or watching and never any bidding wars LOL so always going for my starting bid. But again, luckily none of the items I have posted have cost me anything so either way a profit. Just hate letting go of things for peanuts. :-\

Craigslist is terrible for anything collectible related sadly. People in my area think "or best offer" means to send me a text message at 3AM offering me 1/10th the asking price.
But it is free, and there's no fees when using cash. :D

I wholeheartedly agree with everything you have said Mart,...up until last January,i had 100% feedback 1156 in total,both as a seller & a buyer...but more as a seller,..On the 18th of Dec 2011 i sold an rc model tank,for £187.56,+ £12 postage,the buyer paid within 2 days,via paypal,I had the model all packed up and know how to pack an item,i double boxed it, and sent it via a private courier,and i insured it for the full value,and i sent the buyer a tracking number,I got an email from the buyer on the 24th Dec,telling me that the model was damaged when he opened the box,I asked if there was any visible damage to the box,and if so,could he send me pictures,so that I could male a claim on the Insurance,
He told me yes the box was damaged, but he,d thrown it out,then told me he wanted a refund of £50, i refused and told him to send the model back and i would give him a full refund,On the 27th Dec,he sent me a tracking number,and told me it had been posted that day,
On the 31st Dec, I checked the tracking number,and it said that the parcel had been delivered,...but it never came to my address,I phoned the carrier,and they said it had been delivered on the 30th,i asked them to what address,and the address that they gave me, was a different address from mine,...this address was 15 miles away from where i stayed,I sent an email to the buyer telling him he,d sent it to the wrong address,even although my address was logged with ebay,..3 days later his response was LOL,..then i got an email from Paypal, demanding that i pay them the full amount as they had refunded the money to the buyer,..for the next 2 weeks i got the run around from paypal, trying to contact them was a nightmare,i tried doing it via an email and kept getting put back to where i started, then when i did manage to send them an email, explaining that i had,nt received my model, they said, I must have as the buyer had sent me a valid tracking number,...eventually after numerous phone calls and emails, i was told by paypal,that they had checked all the info i sent,i.e. photo-copy of the delivery address that i got from the carrier,and that i would,nt have to pay anything,
my euphoria lasted for 1 day,
I then got an email saying they had found for the buyer, and i was owe them the full amount,..I told them that i,d see them in court,...On the17th Jan, they shut down my ebay account,and for the next 3 months i was on the phone, sent emails,got a lawyer,...then in July I got an email from paypal telling me the case was closed and i did,nt owe anything,,...then 2 days later, ,I got my model back, the guy to whom it had been sent,tracked me down,..when i opened the box, the model that i,d sent the buyer,..had been stripped of all the expensive bits,and it was basically just a shell,...this so called buyer had planned to rip me off from the outset,...and he,s still on ebay....but here in Scotland ,and no doubt elsewhere we have a saying..."there,s more than one way to skin a cat".....

Bigwull you and cats crack me up!!!!! Mart I so agree I only use ebay as a search tool that's it, I Used to sell & buy years ago but pay pal & ebay have gone crazy in fees and everything else . I too find with craigslist everyone wants everything pretty much for free!! I have had some luck but few and far between.

About two months after they said my account was restricted, out of the blue, I got an email saying "thank you for your patience, and my account was not restricted anymore " !! I never had any correspondence with them,, I just stopped selling !! I thought,, Duh !! I don`t have a clue why it was done anyway !! I have never had a problem with them, until this, nor anyone !! Only sold occassionally and not a lot at that !!

What site will you choose to sell on mart ? I fine that things on ebay are dead. I look to see whats selling and what isn't and prices. I stop putting things up unless it's free. If I have to pay forget it! I think there are better sites, but I haven't tried them yet.

I am doing a few items on my daughters ebay but haven`t sold anything myself !! I really can`t find anything that has the traffic ebay does !!

Unless it's a high demand item forget ebay. It's also the economy. People just don't have extra money or they are afraid to spend.

That is true to a point. But I just sold a couple of small used Steiffs for a total of almost $150 this week. Sure, they went cheap compared to ten years ago. But $150 for two stuffed animals?

When you are in that business you have to go with the flow of the market !! Thats why you have to buy at the best price possible !! Have to CYA in case it bombs out !!

That's the beauty of doing it on consignment. Very little risk to me. :D
Of course, I'm still taking a $2,000 bath from over a year ago on a "brilliant" idea involving eBay and about 100K baseball cards. :(
You win some, you lose some. And as much as eBay drives me up the wall, it is still the best place for most sellers looking to go online.

I hate to admit it,,,but your right !! Non of the sites I have looked at has the traffic that ebay does !!

I've tried a couple of them as well, but I have just never had the results that made it even remotely worthwhile. If a better option were to happen, then I would jump the eBay ship so fast, I might forget my luggage. But I'm not an innovater when it comes to my business, I'm a follower.

Sorry Mart, I don't know why I didn't see your post until now... I plan on selling tobacco tins and other small collectible items. I posted a few items just so I can learn how to use the website, and learn more about shipping an item so that when I start selling bigger items I can send them with confidence that it won't get lost or damaged. A couple Vicks Vaporub bottles, and a couple old pill boxes.

What about Ruby Lane ?? They are more high end antiques but you might check it out !! Better chance for a decent price !! I don`t know any of their regulations !!

I'm not sure if I have anything right now that would be able to go on Ruby Lane... nothing "fancy" enough right now haha. I have never really looked at the site enough though to be sure, so I will check it out... So far no luck using Ebay. I will definitely try buying a few items off of Ebay as well when I have a little bit of extra cash.

A good way to combat the "I love it and I am going to keep it" syndrome we all have is to look at your expenses and your sell inventory !! If all your expenses are paid for the month including your ebay fees and you have enough of an inventory stashed to keep on selling,,then you can keep it !! But if there are bills to pay, and you need to buy more in order to keep a few things going on ebay,,, then sell it and reinvest the profit in a larger inventory !!
