Post by: JustinByram24 on January 17, 2014, 09:57:01 pm
Need help finding out exactly what it is. Found in a store in Fort Campbell, they claimed it had been stolen during Desert Storm and brought back to the states. Age, price, material? Thanks.

About 7 inches tall 2 inches long and about 5 inches wide. I was thinking it was a wine flask because if the grapes on the front. Also the string on it is not original.

No, it feels as if it's a clay/plaster. It has cracks in it.

Ampullae were used for water, wine and oil.  In the olden days, oil for annointing or for tomb preservation/odor control.  It could have also been used for cooking or dipping of bread.  Usually those without handles were typically used for holy water or spiritual oils.

They have been widely used for any number of uses over recent years and carried symbolically.

Could be from a few places in the Middle East from Egypt to Iraq and is worth investigating but the design of vines and grapes / berries looks fairly modern. Has it been stained with oil or some other liquid ? That and the heat could make it appear older than it actually is.

The normal color is white. The material is very chalky like. Cracks here and there but no leaks. It has to be painted or stained.

This is a flask and I don't  see this either. There's a handle on the other side. This is not that rare from what I hear. It's over 100 years old.

it could be  any of whats already been said on the previous post, regarding what it is and what it could hold....out of all the answers you,ve had, i,d have to say, KC,s was the most likely...its an Ampullae....which is used for carrying, water, oil, holy water,...etc...value...where it came from..probably pennies...here...wh at ever anyone is prepared to give you....
