I just picked him up. He is 24" tall, made of wood , hand carved. He has a brass tin type material nailed to him. He has a good amount of patina to him.
-
I have no idea but he is sure ugly !! I mean his face !! :D
-
He is interesting looking. I even just asked a friend of my son's who collects African art and is from Ethiopia originally. He doesn't know either but he said he wants it. lol
-
Maybe it was hung in the bedroom for fertility. I was looking a little.
-
Looking at what would be hair & headdress,,doesn`t look African !! I would think more South American but from where ??? No clue !!
-
Maybe that is why my son's friend didn't know what he is when he collects. At least if he is for fertility I am safe at my age. lol I like my sleep.
-
;D

I don't know what , but since we're all guessin' , it looks more like the Carribe , or sorta gri-gri look to it ... can't tell , but it looks as if there's wear @ the foot of it (was it hand-held , maybe for dancin' & shakin' & such , with flowers/stuff put through the hole in the 'handle'?) sorta like from a hand .
Looks like it could split some wigs !
If I take off my glasses & get far enough away , it looks like a tire-iron/jack tool .
:)
When I enlarge it 400x , it looks like a guy blowing on a pan flute (or eating a snowcone) .
Could just be time to make an appointment for some new specs ...
All that aside , looks like a substantial size piece o' folk/tribal art , & one that folks won't feel neutral about !
-
Or a man balancing on a drum or a stump. To me he looks like he doesn't have hands, lol.
-
That looks like a "Big Bonk" to me.
The Chief carries that around with him and the first person that gets sassy with him .... he bonks them on the top of their head. ;D ;D

I found out what he is. RELIQUARY GUARDIAN FIGURE African. Was attached to a box at a funeral. Would be very sweet if he is in the same company as these http://www.christies.com/LotFinder/searchresults.aspx?action=search&searchtype=p&searchFrom=auctionresults&entry=RELIQUARY%20GUARDIAN%20FIGURE

I know hoping that he is in that same class is wishful thinking but I'm a dreamer. Always look at the cup half full but even some of the lesser ones I saw ran around $800-$1200 so it is a win either way where I only paid $4.99 for him at a Goodwill. Interesting things at those stores sometimes. LOL

I just sent her a picture and it hasn't been bounced back. So it hopefully still works. You have to admit my figure has personality...lol
-
Sure does ! ;D
My initial feeling was that it was a tourist / export piece or maybe a child's copy of his father's work.
The market is saturated with them though and there are genuine rarities out there.
