Title: Silver and Marble decor piece
Post by: junkdrunkjones on February 03, 2014, 11:20:06 am
Hey everybody!
My dad brought this piece to me from a friend. They thought I would know what it is or what it is worth, and unfortunately I don't know either! It is a very heavy item, very intricate shell and koi type fish. The bottom engravings are of the numbers 800 in an oval, and a clover or flower type symbol. This is nothing like the items I tend to collect or sell. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Make them smaller by resizing and don't put so many on one question. Hit reply to yourself and add more.

Can you please list the dimensions of the piece?

Nice looking piece by-the-way!

My first impression was a calling card/business card holder (if smaller) or letter holder (if larger).

800 is a silver mark (hallmarking system) for fineness/purity of silver (800/1000) used in European countries.  It is still used today.

Think i know who this is but need a clear image of the makers mark. Clear image in good light ( no flash )

Worth quite a bit of money if it is.

I was wondering How long it was going to take. I can't see the hall mark either but.... there is info there.

Also need to be checking every square cm of the central design for a monogram or mark.

Great. Natural light is always best. Could be it's just a German crown mark before the 800 standard but i'd be surprised if there wasn't a makers hallmark on this.

Mart, the thought crossed my mind as well.  However, if you have a silver piece like this...you are going to use cloth napkins at an affair, (of which will not sit upright in a napkin holder).  The napkins will be folded in some fancy form/fashion at each place setting  The sides don't look deep enough as well.

Ipcress, I was leaning towards German or French on this as well.
