Title: Chinese vase help needed
Post by: icedgold10 on April 06, 2014, 03:12:43 pm
This vase seems to be chalkware or plaster?  Can anyone help me with dating it ect...?  It is painted not glazed. 13" tall

Hi, I would think it is cast in resin, but it is difficult to tell from the photos. It reminds me of the imitations of Chinese carved cinnabar, but the colour is wrong of course and tries to resemble ivory. I do not think the vase is very old, first half of the 20th century or likely even newer.
Regards, Mat

It isn't resin, that I am sure of.  It's a plaster that's why I'm very confused as to when it could have been made.  I'm used to seeing a ceramic.

Then maybe it is something like the material described in the last post on this thread on the Asian Art Forums: http://www.asianart.com/phpforum/index.php?method=detailAll&Id=17792

Interesting link.  The odd thing is mine isn't glazed and the material powders when scratched.  It has a small hole on the bottom where it has worn.  It is very thick as well.

Maybe it's just plaster then... However, I don't think this makes the vase older... Let's see what others say  :)

Plaster has a long period of use which is why I am having a hard time with age.

I think they're produced with plaster casts. Not very valuable. There are others made of resin

I think it is new as I haven't see anything like that in Ming or Qing book and forums.

This means:
1. My knowledge is very limited
2. Or this is some thing people faked recently.

I don't want to admit option 1 ;D

From listening to every one's opinions I'm listing it as vintage.  I think Mat is on the right track with age.   It kind of reminds me of Marwal from that time period.  Daxu, Never ever admit to number 1.  You can always make up a good story to cover your tracks.  lol
