Title: Antique Van Osdel Electric Hair Cutters
Post by: deweylikedonuts on May 08, 2014, 03:09:48 pm
I came across some old hair clippers of my great grandfathers and can't find anything about them online. I'm hoping someone has some info on them. I'd love to know more about them and how much they may be worth. Not sure if I'd want to sell or not since they're so awesome.

I found a similar style clipper, Moore Brand, on EBay but it was just the motor with no clippers. The owner was asking $65 for them.

The label reads:
Brand: Van Osdel
Patent date: Nov. 11, 1919
Manufactured by: Blomfeldt & Rapp Co. Chicago, IL
Hamilton Beach Manufacturing Company

Questions I'd love to have answers to:
Is this a rare brand since I can't find anything on them?
Were these high end type clippers?
Is there any other info on time frame other than the 1919 patent date?
What is their value?
And of course any other info someone may have.

First of all, welcome to the forum.

Looks like early 1900's.  Well, guess what I just found...

Here is a patent for a pair of clippers invented by William J Van Osden, US 1695516 A, filed for in 1926 and published in 1928.  http://www.google.com/patents/US1695516 (http://www.google.com/patents/US1695516)

Another in 1931

Also note on the patent page there are cited patents of similar items.

There are a couple of people at this group that are into Barber Shop & related items !! You might check with them on a value !! I found a few collector groups but most were for shaving items !!  The problem with items like yours is not having a dedicated collector base !! That is going to keep the value to a minimum !! My personal opinion of value is less than $50. as is !! Cleaned up and re-wired,, about $75. with a good tail wind !!
