Apothecary's Cabinet, 1730, Delft. Veneered with walnut and olive wood in oak core. Contents complete. The small central alcove can be removed to reveal a hidden pulley system that opens a set of secret drawers.
-
That is an amazing piece. ;D
Is it part of your collection?
-
no, just saw it on FB this morning. It's Dutch, i stay pretty much in my lane with American pieces. It looks like Doc's were doing OK though, even back in the day! Another thing that's striking is, "contents complete", i wonder what kinda potions are in those bottles.
-
Now that is amazing !! Is it going to auction or just a showpiece ??
-
I dont know, article didnt say, it should be in a museum probably
OOPS, it is in a museum, photo was taken by Rijksmuseum
-
I posted it because apothecary chests are highly collectable in the american antiques market but, i have never seen anything like the one in the photo. Another thing, it has all those Delft pottery containers and, Delft blue is a rather big deal to pottery collectors.
-
I would think it's virtually priceless.
-
Yeah, agrees with Ghopper "I would think it's virtually priceless."
-
I would agree on the priceless comment as well.
What an awe inspiring piece. Well-to-do docs definitely had this!

This chest was posted to my FB page for comment by hosman321 who used to post here all the time, i have tried in the past to get her back on this forum but alas, no go, she ain't comin back! Was someone in here mean to her or what happened?
-
You'll remember that more than one of us "minimized" there for awhile. I wish she'd come back as well.
Come back!!!!!

I have no idea what happened but wish she would come back as well !! Or at least explain the decision !!
-
minimized? I am not following you. That peckerwood? i forget his name that insulted people all the time ran her off?
I'll ask her again, this thread offers the perfect opportunity to try one more time.
OK, DONE! I messaged her on FB with a link to this thread, we shall see.
UPDATE!!! she just texted on FB that she'll log in when she gets home in about a half hour. I say one of the girls here was mean to her or that nutcase that used to be on here!
-
Glad to see you're all still here!
Gorgeous cabinet, I wish I could see it in person.
I thought I logged in once and told everyone about where I'd been. Two years ago, when I was heavy into antique collecting, my husband left. And left me with $0. I had to sell most of my antiques to pay the rent and watch them be loaded onto a truck and driven away. I loved them and it was extremely hard for me. I've never gotten back into collecting, I guess because I just have terrible memories. I have some here and there around the house but I mostly collect crystals and minerals now. Maybe I'll take a few pictures of my antiques and post them. I moved to AZ from Washington and all of my belongings from my "previous" life are in WA still. I moved here with a few outfits and my cat. :-)
Anywho, great to "see" you all again!
-
I've never gotten back into collecting
Hmmmmmm, that's not exactly correct, didn't you buy a walnut cabinet awhile back? I remember doing an evaluation of it.
-
Guilty. And the dresser. And...
Lol
I guess I should have said that I'm not buying every antique I see anymore. :-)
-
"Nutcase?" "Peckerwood?" This doesn't sound like the Jacon I know ;D
Yes, I was referring to that Special Someone from across The Pond. More than one of us "minimized" our presence here back in the day as things became ugly around here. Our returning friend's "disappearance" corresponded with all that; thus my supposition.
In any case, sorry to hear about the ugly divorce behavior......and welcome back!!
-
Yeah well, you know how it is, some people deserve those terms. I do not deal well with men/boys that display bad behavior, there is no excuse for it.
-
;D OK Jacon4 !! There is a difference between collecting and buying something just because you want it !! Hi there Hosman321 !! Glad you are back !! Seems like you did tell me about that but,,remember I have slept since then !! Hope all is going well for you now !! We missed you !!
-
Thanks, Mart! And you're right about a difference between collecting and just buying once in awhile. I don't seek out antiques or look for them at all anymore. They just kind of cross my path and if the deal is too good to pass up, I'll buy it.
-
No worries either way. You may as well fall down the collecting rabbit hole again and join the rest of us fools!! ;D
-
You're a terrible influence! Lol
One hobby at a time. :-)
-
And speaking of bad divorce behavior, my ex got almost all of my pieces 25 years ago, she didn't even like antique furniture however, she knew it was important to me so that was THAT! I swore off collecting forever after that little dealio, naturally, that didn't last very long, maybe 5 years or so. Times change, circumstances too, a brand new day, a brand new deal, prosperity for everyone!
-
Absolutely true! Sorry you had to go through that.
-
TOTALLY OFF THREAD! but hey, that's how i roll! I came across a gorgeous photo of this rather famous blanket chest today, hopefully i can post it. Striking example of a style change in America around 1700, from carved decoration to painted decoration. It's still got the boxy, joined construction of the pilgrim period but the shallow relief carving, which lasted 100 years during the Jacobean period is gone gone GONE!
-
Wow !! Now that is a busy blanket chest !! Need my sunglasses for that one !! :D
-
That paint is in amazing condition, but I'll take the 17th century over the 18th any time, ha ha.
-
WELCOME BACK HOSMAN321! Us "oldies" are still here trying to fill our antique cravings by looking at everyone elses antiques! (Like you, I keep buying...but only what I need!)
Just bought a 98" sideboard last week! Burled wood and beautiful! Might post a pic one day!
That blanket chest almost requires sunglasses! LOL Gorgeous!
-
Yeah, post that pic KC! ;)
-
Yeah, a rather dramatic change no doubt. The above chest was built in Hadley Mass. and, if you google hadley chest you will see a couple dozen chests, all with similar construction which means all built at around the same time, say 1690-1720 or so. Now this Hadley joiner below was not willing to give up the traditional relief carving but, he wasn't gonna get left behind by some dude with a paint brush either! So, he played both ends against the middle and this was his result.
-
and this one too
-
Jacon4, the last one (with my hubby's initials) is my favorite so far!
These pieces are so beautifully done. Their style isn't dated and can transition well with any decorating theme.
-
LOL, I hear you KC, the last one is the Miriam Cook hadley chest and it sold for a cool 180K, actually a pretty good price all things considered.
Where is this famous sideboard we have been hearing about?
-
Didn't want to hijack your thread but here is a picture of it. Needed a long/wide sideboard and would have preferred one from late 1800's like my 19th C French Buffet a deux Corps but couldn't find one with same carving details/style and I have looked for over 9 years. I also didn't want to spend an arm/leg. So had to go with French and complimentary!
-
My Buffet a deux Corp. Sorry should have cleaned it off but going through tons of pieces my parents are giving to "clear up their home"! We are also in upheaval packing everything away and moving furniture because we are having the bottom floor carpet/tile ripped out and installing wood and reclaimed french limestone throughout the house. (My faithful companion of 14 1/2 years was put down a couple of weeks ago so now is the time to update/remodel.)
-
Yeah! KC goes for the rococo too i see! Love the house in the first pic! How tall are those ceilings? Thread was played out, revived it a little bit isnt a bad thing, dead slow around here.
-
Thanks. We've had it for 25 years and still working on it.
The pics are both the same room believe it or not. Appx 18' ceilings.
The Buffet deux Corps is just under 9' tall.
-
Thanks. We've had it for 25 years and still working on it
Geez, 25 years and you are still married? One hell of a remodel project there!
-
Beautiful buffet, beautiful house!
-
Yeah, is. Sell the house and buy hubby that MC chest, he's earned it!
-
Thread isn`t dead Jacon4 !! I am keeping up with the daily episodes !! Nice KC !!! How do you clean those windows ??
-
Mart, I married someone that believes, like me, we do all the housework just as we were raised. Same way we raised our kids. So, an extension ladder, and my personal Handy Man.
When we bought here 25 yrs ago we were a unique neighborhood surrounded by hundreds of acres of pastureland. Now it has built up around us with some housing sections but mostly mansions/estates. That's bad because we lost our tranquility - but good because we had the opportunity to increase our home investment. So, we have remodeled/updated to keep up and triple our home values.
The average home/mansion around us has several handy men/businesses that do all of their work. We just laugh and say that we both sleep with the hired help - eachother! :) Eventually we will sell and move to the country...again!
Here's someone you may have heard of in the past who's place sold just up the road from us:

Friends used to own this property which became a mega mansion development. A common size "home" (10,000sf+) http://mansion-homes.com/dream/fabulous-colleyville-equestrian-estate/?pg=5 (http://mansion-homes.com/dream/fabulous-colleyville-equestrian-estate/?pg=5)
Jacon4 the hubby and I enjoy working together no matter what we are doing and we definitely love a good challenge. We have friends who are builders (and built lots of these mansions) who have helped us on the big remodeling parts for a fraction of the cost. We are very blessed.
-
LOL !! I would need a compass to get around in a house that big !!
