Title: storage locker finds!
Post by: awhitetriangle on March 01, 2017, 10:47:04 am
So i started today with a monster task. Four storage units worth of  antiques and collectables! i'll post finds on this thread or it could get a bit crazy! First out of the back of the car.... wish i'd have taken the truck!!!

I'm sure most will be familiar with the artist Vladimir Tretchikoff, this one is the basuto girl, vintage 1950's framed lithograph.

A primative celtic milking stool (i guess?) it only stands 21cm high so its a wee little thing! Wonderful paitina, guessing it dates to the mid 1800's? though could well be earlier....

A friend approached me knowing i do a lot of buying and selling of antiques. Her elderly father has just had major surgery he's collected all his life and never sold a thing! she's given me the task of sorting it all out and getting rid of it. I also found a 1950's vintage ford pop in one of them well from the tiny bit i could see that's what it looked like!

Frederick James Aldridge (1850-1933) original water colour. A little bit of info below. 1922.

Aldridge was a south coast artist, who lived in Worthing.  He is predominantly known for his watercolours, mainly of marine subjects.  In this medium he shows exceptional powers. He was a regular visitor to Cowes Week for some 50 years.  He exhibited paintings locally, between 1880 and 1901 and also 29 paintings in London venues, including 3 in the Royal Academy and 12 at the Suffolk Street Galleries.

He died at the age of 83 in 1933 and his obituary appeared in ‘The Times’ newspaper of that date commented that he has established an international reputation especially in the British Commonwealth Countries.

Sounds like a big and interesting job you've taken on.

I would wonder about the age of that ironstone planter?

Wasn't Cagnes the location that Renoir painted at later in life?

Thought the same thing Rauville,, !!  But looks like the other items will make up for that one !!  The milking stool I think is later not earlier,, the hole in the center for a lathe !!  Early ones are more utilitarian than decorative that I have seen !!  I would say around 1900 !!

Yes heck of a task! i'm eager to get back and do some more rummaging. Thanks for your replies, i'll do some more research into the planter as the made in china sticker on your pic certainly raises a few questions! The stool too will require a bit more digging, i'm not too concerned about the mark from the lathe as they were first used in ancient egypt around 1300 bc if memory serves me correctly... more research def. needed! i'll put some pics of more of yesterdays haul up today...

True they have been using lathes but not usually for a milking stool !!   I keep forgetting you are not in the U.S. !!  Maybe its different where you are !!

Sorry for the delay posting more from the first batch! Next up a nice vintage lithograph by Sir Gerald Kelly (b London, 9 Apr. 1879; d London, 5 Jan. 1972). British painter. One of the leading society portraitists of his day, he had many distinguished friends, among them Somerset Maugham, whose portrait by Graham Sutherland he wittily attacked. From 1949 to 1954 he was president of the Royal Academy; in this position he devoted much of his time to organizing loan exhibitions, and became well known for his appearances in related television programmes.

I've done a little more research into the celtic design milking stool, you were correct it dates to around 1900 not earlier as i initially thought...

cheers mart, i'm an artist myself so made sense to start with what i know best! I have just removed the wc from its frame and sadly there is no info. Here's a mixed media work of mine from a solo exhibition in london a few years back. Collage, paint charcoal and fire were used in this one!

Your Uranium glass set with the butterflies (vasaline is not green) was made by Sowerby Glass located in England approx 1930
Will search your other dresser set later on :)

So Wendy177 you are a purist when it come to this glass? (All Vaseline glass is uranium based but not all uranium glass is Vaseline glass.) Uranium Dioxide makes the glass yellow green, and typically iron was added (in addition to the uranium) to make the green.  There is even Uranium Glass that is clear and some that doesn't fluoresce.

Just wondering!

KC I don't think I'm a purist when it comes to anything   LOL     Often I use the term Canary glass for "Vaseline" glass too  but that is a much older reference. Both have Uranium but it is how some separate the Yellow / green color in natural light. There is also glass colored with uranium  custard glass and Burmese glass but they are opaque  canary, uranium glass is transparent. Simply just a term that has been used to separate yellow from green.  I try not to make it rocket science LOL  :)

Tiger lily, no ?

Tiger lilies, manchurian cranes, insects, birds - default subject matter for many an Oriental artist.

I can only speak to the varieties I am familiar with !!  There are many varieties !!  Tiger lilies that I know grow on an upright stem with the leaves growing alternately along it and the flower ( can be several) at the top !!  Can have tiny dark spots inside the flower !!   Daylilies are a clumping type with the leaves growing from the soil and the flower extending on upright stem from the clump !!  Height determined by variety !! Can be many colors !!

Thats the best I can explain about the varieties I know !!
Could be a different variety of Tiger Lily or that could be a common name !!  I just know the ones we have in Texas !!  I have a few naturalized daylilies here in my yard !!  Have been trying to get Tiger lilies started but the seed just does not do well here !!  Daylilies you can just transplant part of a clump !!  Our Tiger lilies have seed !!
But I have tons of Spider lilies,, need some ??

Hi thanks for the replies everyone! next up a slightly naive or primitive water colour of the river teign (just a couple of miles away, one of my favorite drinking holes is at the mouth of the estuary so i know this place pretty well!) its monogrammed and dated 1806. I've searched the artists signature database for EH, FH and HH but havent found any that match up to the date.

Douglas Houzen Pinder 1886-1949 Newquay Artist

Douglas Houzen Pinder is one artist that spent many years in Newquay. Born in 1886 and with his father dying the following year, by 1901 he had moved, with his mother, to Newquay, where she was an Infant Mistress at a Boarding School, with Douglas articled to a local architect.

In 1908 Douglas Pinder married married Edith Jane Osborne from St Wenn, near to Padstow and Wadebridge.  He started to paint watercolours in 1911.

During the 1914-1918 war, Pinder was a Conscientious Objector, a member of the Plymouth Brethren, and he took a job as a postman.  His initial application for exemption was dismissed and Pinder had to answer questions about his faith and Christianity before being granted exemption from combatant service only, in June 1916.

After the war he ventured to Egypt, having been commissioned to paint many desert scenes close to Port Said. After that he moved to Devon and returned to Newquay in 1930.

By 1930 Douglas Pinder had his own art gallery, called Towan Studios, at 80 Fore Street, Newquay. Pinder painted many watercolours and a far smaller number of oils. He usually painted seascapes, often including detail which allowed the location to be clearly identified. He never owned a car, so the location of his paintings was limited to how far he could walk or travel on his bicycle, which was adapted to carry his painting equipment. He would also have been able to use public transport, or possibly occasional trips with friends or neighbours. Most of his paintings are of Newquay or the North Cornwall Coast.

Pinder’s wife, Edith JH Pinder, died in the 1st quarter of 1949, aged 66 and Douglas died at 79 Mount Wise, Newquay, on 14 November 1949, aged just 63.

After his death, in 1949, the studio property remained in the family.

During his travels he used different names, signing his work as Ben Graham and A.P. Shepherd. Upon returning to Newquay he used the name Douglas Pinder again, signing as DH Pinder or Douglas (H) Pinder.
How Much is a Douglas Pinder Picture Worth?

The worth of any painting will depend on the size, quality and the subject. It also depends on where it’s sold (the marketing and exposure gained) as well as the changing trends in the art world.

I’ve seen smaller watercolours sold for £40-60 yet larger pieces selling for upwards of £1000. The £300-£500 range is a typical price for paintings by Pinder.   One painting of the Island, Newquay, was valued at about £120 in 2016, the price probably reflecting his intimate knowledge of the subject, enabling him to bring out its qualities more effortlessly.

As Seen on Flog It

In 2016 one of a Douglas Pinder painting appeared on TV show Flog It.  That was a watercolour of Port Isaac, showing a harbour scene.  It was estimated on the show to be worth £80-120 as it had been removed from the frame and wasn’t in great condition.  This painting by Pinder sold at auction for £80.

Many Douglas Pinder paintings were also produced as postcards, which can make a nice piece of wall art when mounted and framed – these are trending in recent years!

An stunning original watercolour on paper, depicting highland cattle in the Scottish landscape. The image measures 17 cm x 35 cm, in its orignal oak frame with gilt slip. Signed lr. Very nice condition.

I live in Pinder country - Cornwall -  and that might be Dartmoor, not the Scottish Highlands.

This is his painting of Post Bridge, Dartmoor

I was not joking !!  Throw a little water on these bulbs and they will live anywhere !!  I was going to send  a few to someone on my garden group so I dug them and put them in a bowl and set it in the garage !!  She got some from another member and so these didn`t get mailed !! Totally forgot about the ones I dug until the next spring when I saw greenery peeking out !!  It was just the bulbs,, no dirt !!  Thats when I decided these things were indestructible !!

yes it could well be dartmoor, i live in south devon one of my ex girlfriends lives up on the moors i've spent a lot of time up there beautiful beautiful part of the country. When i sell this place that's probably where i will be heading. The reason i thought this was the highlands was threefold firstly the old boy i'm selling all this on behalf of is scottish, the painting was purchased in scotland then the obvious one is the highland cattle. But it could easily be dartmoor. Love cornwall too have many a fond childhood holiday memory of holidays there, my favorite area has to be the lizard, kynance cove is a particular favorite....
