Welcome to the forum , darkestlight .
Have you attempted to contact the Cousteau Society to inquire there ?
-
yes i sent them 2 emails but got no response thanks

Hmmm... go figure , eh ?
It does appear to be a bursars' safe/strongbox .
What are it's dimentions I/S & O/S .... are there any markings on it -ser #'s , manufacture , etc ?
Also , what manner of link/relationship did the gift-reciever have with cousteau ?
-
the size is 20x12x12 inches and it has one handle on each side there are no serial #s or manufacturer id marks on the box. The only info i have is that the letters (R Y) are consistant with the cousteau ship "the calypso" being a royal yatch (R Y). As far as my friend knows his grandfather was a diver x navy man too (Arles Beery) he was said to be friends of the cousteau family and went on some dive expeditions with them. Mr beery has passed away and my friend did not know his grandfather as he had died before he was old enough to know him thats what i know so far
thanks

I'm wondering if there's specific information you're looking for , darkestlight .
Is your safe functional ..i.e.-does it lock , open & close ?
It does not appear as if you've removed the keylock (can't see any toolmarks on the exterior screws) to inspect for manufacturer's logo, name , etc .
Do you have any proof of it's provenance , other than word-of-mouth ?

I was wondering about provenance too but would it really add to the value of this piece. I don't know if the son of Jauque Coustoue would be anything significant in the realm of antique colleting.
It does appear to be a nice old high quality nautical safe tied in with a interesting history and maybe thats where the value would lie.JMO
