I have an oil painting that has been passed down to me from my father who passed away in 2005.
The only info I have is that it is a picture of the Bavarian mountains (with water at the bottom) that was where Hitler later built his summer home.
It was brought here from Germany by my grandfather - it was hidden in the walls so that the Nazi's would not confiscate it during their raids for valuables to support the war.
It does have a small hole in it & I brought it to be cleaned & repaired shortly after my dad died, but since they said the signature was illegible & could not determine the value, I should leave it alone.
If anyone has any info, please let me know.

emconn22, if you could post pics please ? That will give members more to go on......front, back and a shot of the signature would
be ideal.

Sure looks like A Bunmitter or Bunwitter.

Don't know if it will show up here but the last four letters look like 'ttey' preceded by one or two i's (at least to me ......and I'm
tired) ;)

emconn, would that be Lake Chiemsee? And is the painting oil or watercolor?
(Sorry.....really have to read when I'm awake :P Reread the original and see the 'oil'.)

I'm thinking there is an umlaut there and this may be a German name. Bumüller perhaps?

A bad critique I guess, what would an "illegible signature" have to do with getting it cleaned and repaired if said was expertly done? ???

Good call wayward! Was wondering why it was looking like ' ii ' . ;)

I was told not to clean it or do anything to it until I found out who the artist was because it would effect the value if it was worth anything.

Welcome to the forum , emconn22 .
In my experience(s) with more than 1k oil paintings I've purchased , not one was adversely affected in value by cleaning (those that were 'properly' cleaned , that is) ... matter of fact , it usually brings out hidden details that were concealed by 'soiling' on the painting .
Framing elements (wood, etc.) can be harmful to your painting , and I'd suggest you use some "acid-free" products to protect your canvas from them (there's some 'tapes' that are used to line the interior of wood frames) .
Other concerns could be those of molds/fungus in/on the canvas (often can be seen on the back of the canvas) .
The fact that you've mentioned the existence of a hole in the painting reflects , to me , a specific area that could be damaged by cleaning , however .
I'm not advocating that you get out some cleaning supplies & 'do-it-yourself' , though .
Cleaning oil paintings can be a very delicate process , depending on the condition of any given painting & all of the elements of the canvas & stretchers & such .
Nice little oil painting , emconn22 .
