Title: A question from my mother in law
Post by: greenacres on December 22, 2010, 01:44:11 pm
This is my mother in laws furniture. She gave it to me years ago. I know at one point someone offered me $5,000.00 for it. Of course it's not for sale. It's extremely heavy. I have the headboard, but it only holds maybe a queen size bed. I think its really a full size bed. I have a king size bed. The headboard is beautiful. I for to get the picture because it's in another room. She bout it 65yrs. ago. She wants to remember the name but she can't. What are your thoughts about the furniture. They are red leather panels. There are two night tables. The offer I had was probably 18yrs. ago.

I love it! The slow responses may be because this one looks a bit tricky and people are doing research. Part of me says late 1800's and part of me says 1930's-ish. I love the red leather, pretty unique. Although I can't offer much advice, I do like them!

The style of the dresser looks late 30`s even into the 40`s.  But it is not one that I recognize as far as who actually made it.  It is a nice set,,I would like to know who made it as well as when.

Is there a place I can look. I want to take out the drawer, but i've never seen a mark or should I look on the back. It's so heavey. The night tables are moveable I start looking again. The carvings always fascinated me. I was shocked at the price of Baker furniture. I have a Baker Breakfront and Dinning room set. When I researched that furniture, I learned that to buy it today I would have to sell my first born child.

This kind of reminds me of it. These are two nights stand I found. The build is similar. These night stands sell for $2350.00, but they are also Australian, which mine aren't. http://www.antiquesplus.com.au/index.cfm/items/subcategory/1320-cabinets-bedside/?start=21    Scroll down a bit.

Funnily enough, Greenacres, this reminds me of a suite that I saw in Kyiv a few years back, with similar leather padding, which had come from Russia, I believe, and was early 20th c .... But probably nothing at all to do with your MIL's   :D  Sorry

Check the back of the mirror for a label or makers name.  It could be on any of the pieces though.

I am kinda befuddled on this one.  It looks early 30's to 40's.

I even had some pieces I bought in the 70's that were made with leather insets....so it still goes on even today whenever the artisans get the whim to include it.

Take a picture of the side of a pulled out drawer and see how it is connected and any connections (latch/hinge that looks easily identifiable.  Check inside the piece (with drawers out) and along the back for any markings.

The color that shows up on my screen looks like it is stained versus a natural color - however I don't know if this is due to your camera.

Still thinking on this one.  I SURE MISS D & B dropping in with his tremendous knowledge!

This may take me two replies. These are pictures of drawers sides with dovetails, and backs, handles, and underneath. Sorry for the bad lighting. I'm not sure if I got good enough photos. Let me know?

Construction still looks 30`s to 40`s to me. A bit Art Nouveau in style. I have seen others of that period with the same oval panels. But they did not have the leather added.  Looking at the pic of the drawer bottom,,what do the screws look like that attach the drawer guide ? are they flat head or phillips?

When your MIL bought it 65 years ago, was it new?

My husband says it was new, he says it was exspensive then. I added a better picture of the drawer. They turned out to be hand nailed not screws. The drawer looks brand new. It's amazing.

Do you think this is a copy from a earlier time period? It looks very similar to the Queen Anne set. Is it a copy of that furniture or is that furniture the same time period? I know in the 30's and 40's tthey copied the 17th and 18th furniture. Such as this clock, I wish it were real, but it's not. This clock is worth $850.00 and the real is worth $7,000.00 Darn!, lol Is the set worth $5,000.00 or is it more or is it less? Or, is it only worthwhat someones willing to pay for it?

Much was copied during that time. And yours might be as well but I think that your set was made by a prominate company at that time. Its construction shows quality. At least from what I can see. I would not stop looking for the maker. Price wise, I can only speak for my area, and here you could probably get $5000. easy since its a complete set.

I'm haven;t gave up yet. The problem is it's really heavy and you have to becareful of the hard woods moving it. The bureau has a matching mirror that sits on top. I would like to pull it away and see what's on the back. I just have to talk my husband into helping me.

Let me know what you find. I would like to know who made it as well. Many were labeled or otherwise marked on the back of the mirror.

I moved the dresser today. The mirror said N. Goodheart, but when I looked it up, there was a salesman from Missori or someplace not near me. Now I should have taken a picture, but I was praying you knew the name.

I'm disappointed at the $1200.00 dollars price for all those pieces, but as I said I'm not selling it anyway. I'm just glad I found a name finally.
