Antique Questions Forum / Who knows bird decoys?
« on: December 21, 2011, 03:59:23 pm »
I have this goose decoy but I haven't been able to locate a good resource for finding the maker or value. Its made of wood and has glass eyes. Its small for a goose so I think it is only a half size decoy. It measures 14" long and 5" wide. Thanks Kevin.

Antique Questions Forum / Andrew Wyeth
« on: December 15, 2011, 06:18:27 pm »
I have a work well actually two works that were done by Andrew Wyeth. Of course just about anyone would hope they had an original but I would be very happy with a print as well. I took this work out of the frame and on the reverse side was another smaller image titled in the bottom left corner of the paper "Hoffman's Slough". I have been looking to see if any prints were made with an image on the reverse but all I can find is originals with images on the reverse side. First image measures 12.5" x 16". Second reverse image measures 8" x 15". Thanks, Kevin

Antique Questions Forum / Napoleon Medallion
« on: November 25, 2011, 10:28:56 pm »
I have what I think is a pretty rare Napolion medallion. It measures about 1.75". On the front it read Napoleon I Emperor of France and King of Italy. On the back translates to Value and Victory. On the inside are fourteen round paper discs with battle scenes on them and the dates the battles took place. I translated what I could of the writing inside into english but I dont know where I my notebook is right now. I know Napoleon was famous for having medallions made but I haven't been able to find any like this one.

Antique Questions Forum / Oil Painting Please Help
« on: October 19, 2011, 11:01:00 pm »
I have this oil painting on canvas I posted someplace else and I wasn't really impressed with the help I got. This painting came with a collection of Czech stuff I purchased. I figured out what town it was by comparing it to pictures of Czech towns. Its a painting of the town of Kutna Hora. Next I compared the painting to the earliest known photos of Kutna Hora that were taken in 1865 and there are alot more buildings in the photos compared to my painting. The wide building to the left is the Jesuit College which in 1843 to 1844 the center tower was removed from this side of the building. So the painting depicts the town sometime after 1844 but before 1865.

Its signed John Stowasser but he is not a known artist so that is a dead end. I did find one John Stowasser from that region who was born in 1847 and moved to Budapest in 1867. He owned a musical instrument factory in Budapest.

How old do you think this painting is?

Antique Questions Forum / Toy Indian
« on: October 05, 2011, 10:32:46 pm »
I have this little hollow metal Indian I haven't been able to find. He sits 1.5" tall and about 1" wide. He has a movable left arm which I guess makes it easier to smokem his peace pipe. I think he is lead and has England down his back.

Antique Questions Forum / Carving Knife and Fork
« on: October 05, 2011, 03:21:35 pm »
I received this carving knife and fork from my great uncle. He couldn't tell me much about it only that he got this from his grandfather. His grandfather was a colonel in the Union Army during the Civil War. I'm thinking it was either made during that time or before the civil war. Was trench art common during the civil war? The only marks I could find is the letter N.

Antique Questions Forum / Haas & Czjzek
« on: October 05, 2011, 12:04:31 pm »
I have this Haas & Czjzek silver overlay deer I can't find much about. This is an item I would like to sell but I don't know what would be a good price. I have seen only a few other animals made by H&C that seemed to be from around the same time. The one was estimated at being from around 1931 and was repaired. I did manage to find a deer made by Royal Dux that seemed to be made from the same mold but was not as finely detailed as my Haas & Czjzek deer. Value? Thanks Kevin.
