Antique Questions Forum / Re: How much gold and diamond is this worth?
« on: March 31, 2010, 12:17:47 pm »
I have a 1 lb. box of Gulf "sealing" Wax in the original box and it is sitting out in my garage on a  shelf. Is it collectible?

I would think so since Gulf dont exist anymore.

IMO Gulf was one of the best oil companies around until a very greedy Chevron took over, when the takeover happened, it screwed many people out of benefits.

I wish Gulf was still around myself.

I think its more then that, I got an offer of $60 for it and accepted and wondered if it was worth more for its weight and the diamond in it.

I am finding most anyone who would buy these though probably worked for Gulf at one time before it was bought out in the 80s.

Most every site I have looked at has not asked for under $100 for it.

jennifer, antique means over 100 years old.

Unfortunately, this item has been duplicated and re-manufactured more times than we can count.

We need to see a picture and a close up pic of the markings please!

I consider Antique anything pre 1970 unless its things like furniture.

Automobiles are usually considered antique after 30 years I believe.

Trying to imagine it, looks like whatever it is you set down on the seat facing the back pieces.

Possible machine of some sort?

Antique Questions Forum / Re: walthem pocket watch?
« on: March 10, 2010, 02:08:11 pm »
I have set at this computer for 2 solid days researching watches. I haven't even seen a set of gears like the ones in this watch. The only reason i thought it to be a waltham is because some of them come close to matching the shield on the front of it& i found pics of waltham watches that had the same markings that are on the round piece attached to the chain beside the key. Any other suggestions????

Looks like English Movement from early to mid 19th century.

Which would remove the idea its a Waltham, it also uses a Key wind, which I believe went away later on in the 1800s.

I am thinking though this case is probably fairly new and was replaced at some point, this is why you cant identify it. Many pocket watches that old really had no identity to them.

alot of watches have that shield and design, my 1822 Silver watch has that exact design. Many watch makers or case makers tend to copy designs quite often.

looks too good for its age, I know that much.

I wonder if this was restored or it was setting unused for all that long?

from looking, the 1796's are mass produced in reproductions or are counterfeited.

the 1906 Ellis island is also mass produced in reproductions or are counterfeited.

I am almost willing to bet most of what you got is reproductions though, otherwise you are sitting on a small gold mine.

especially on the 1906 Ellis Island and 1796s and maybe even the 1803 as well.

the 1796 one should be interesting once you post pics.

its definately a railroad sign, but more questions are raised as to when the sign was decommissioned, which I would guess 1950s in which around that point and time it was repainted.

I am guessing its out of the late 1800s though if thats the style sign they used, but how long was this style used and produced?

truthfully from the pictures, it dont look like a painting, more like something printed maybe from an original, kind of like how those paintings look in Doctors Offices.

I say this due to its high quality detail, especially the other ship in the far background, its as if this came from a printing press.

But like I said, I dont know by just looking at the pics.
