Antique Questions Forum / Re: Need Help on 18th Century Silver Compass

looks like it. Thanks for the link. The face is enamel. Only difference is the back in the link you posted looks more rounded where the one I have is flat. Forgot to mention this but the compass is pretty heavy, more so than it looks. Thanks again for the link!

Your eyes are much better than mine LOL. Yeah, I can read certain words but I figure I'd need a magnifier in order to make the entire inscription out. You could be right. I'm just going by what the tag says. I don't think I know it is way over priced & was hoping someone would tell me what a fair price would be for it.This one really has me stumped. Anyways, thanks for the reply!!

Antique Questions Forum / Need Help on 18th Century Silver Compass
« on: March 31, 2014, 05:33:29 pm »
I have a very old silver compass. The glass is broken and the arrow is loose but still in tact. I don't have much info on it except for what the price tage says which is ' Silver Compass Back Engraved c. 18th C.' I posted some pics of the back with the inscription, but as you can tell it is very tiny and I seem to have misplaced my magnifying glass. I will hopefully find it and post the entire inscription (it's pretty lengthy)

My question is, I don't how much to ask or what more to tell potential buyers other than what I listed above, which is all I know. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I'd say yes. Only part I have taped from the back in the middle image staying in tact. Edges are okay, some are loose, but not really separated.......yet . Like I said, I've grown to really like the frame. I like the fact that A) it's original and B) It's so simple. Thanks again.

I just discovered that I posted about this right after I got it here in this forum,so I answered some of my questions already. The painting is titled 'The Three Carracci'. Lodovico, Agostino & Annibale.

Here is a link to my original thread on this.

Yes,its on a panel. I was told it was rare to have the subjects smile in portraits like these. One of the subjects is an artist(not clear if he was one who did this painting) along with his two brothers. I always thought they looked like Happy little Hobbits.

Antique Questions Forum / Need Advice on Restoring/Framing an Old Painting
« on: December 24, 2013, 08:34:45 am »
A few years ago I bought this awesome mini portrait. As much as I love it I was never crazy about the frame (which I am told was probably made by the artist) It's falling apart,I have it taped together and sitting on a small table easel. Well, with some extra money I have for the Holidays, I'd like to see what I can do to display this painting properly. I decided not to have any restoration done to the painting itself. I personally think it adds some charm to the painting and am afraid to tinker with something so delicate. The frame on the other hand is a different story.

Looking for some advice here. Should I keep the frame I have and just try to fix it a little or should I look for another antique frame that would fit the size? Or,should I just get a regular frame that looks old? I don't want anything to elaborate. I like keeping it rather simple. I'd love to hear any suggestions.

Also, does anyone know of a good place that does antique painting restoration or framing? I'd consider sending it to a place if they had a good reputation and was recommended. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

Thanks for the link! Well now I am curious. I did not think this was worth that much, which goes to show you just can never tell. Can anyone guess what this particular item would fetch, considering the condition. No box,but in pretty decent shape except for a rip in one of the ears.

Wow Thanks! I tried ebay but got so many I gave up. Was hoping to find a brand or make to help narrow my search down. The wood Mickey figure is about 3 1/2 inches high. Other than the ear having a rip it's in pretty good shape. I'm told This was in a display cabinet in a dark room with no sunlight for about 38 years. When removed from the display case it was pretty dusty. Thanks again for locating that link.

Wow Thanks! Damn, IMO,they are asking a lot of $$$ for it being so damaged. Hey,thanks again for the link!

I have a friend who inherited some Disneyana items and am trying to help him identify some figures. The original collector was a serious collector of all things Mickey Mouse and has some rare and beautiful items. These two pieces are the ones that stump me. I have found some items in this collection that fetch around $400 - $1,500- $3,00o and up. Then again, some items are worth maybe $5. This person did not really collect for price. All they were interested in was Mickey Mouse. So, I have no idea or interest really in the value as I do in just finding out about the piece. Below are some pics. If anyone has any knowledge or idea who made these I would really appreciate any info. Thanks everyone and Happy Holidays!

Can barely remember that. I think I still have it somewhere. I have not sold much of anything for a year or more.

Thanks for the replies. Not sure if there was a seal and it came off or if there was never one to put on. For some reason I don't see this being that old (although I could be wrong) Thanks again!
