Antique Questions Forum / Childrens Chair
« on: October 10, 2010, 06:56:15 pm »
This piece was given to me as a small child about 45 years ago by my grandfather.I really don't think it was new then, but maybe it was.I've tried to do my homework on this but get stalled out on the childrens part.I know the maker and production number but I can't date it.My mother always called it a"captains chair". Would sure like to know how old it is.Thanks!

American Indian artifact prices are usually based on age, condition, authenticity, craftmanship, and rarity of the piece.Provenance is also a criteria.I've personally collected artifacts and researched them since I was was a "youngin",over forty years. My collection came almost entirely as surface finds from our family farm.I myself have never bought, sold or even as much traded a piece, but others do.An authentic collection DOES have value, how much?A knowledgeable buyer will determine that.IF your thinking about "lending'' to a museum -get the proper assurance it IS a loan situation.I don't want to discredit any museum,if someone leaves for any reason make sure your artifacts don't get ''lost''.There are a number of sites and forums you can visit other than ebay that wil give you a better understanding on what you actually have.Tnet is a good place to start.

Truly an AWESOME display !I see no''rejects'' there.Through use, time and maybe farm implements(depending on where they were found) they tend to get dinged up a little.Although the largest point/blade is mounted with copper wire, thats kind of a no-no with the artifact collectors. That one point could be worth alot of$$$or$$$$.Some really nice pieces !!!!!!THey dont have to be perfect to tell they're story.

Thanks cogar for the input-it IS hand blown .I did although discover, via the site provided by Tales,it is most likely an ''olive oil" bottle circa.1850-1870 (roughly).Probably not worth much in a retail setting, but will look really cool with my favorite olive oil and pour spout in it . Thanks once again Tales ! I probably will send an email to the guy that runs the site just to make sure .

My father found this bottle in a crane bucket of sediment from the Potomac River in the early 50s while building a bridge in D.C. I've tried to research this bottle ,in the absence of number or markings,I have pretty much come up more confused.I do know, despite myself,it's 13'' tall and 2 and3/8'' diameter at the bottom. My previous posts here have been an excellent experience! Thanks if you can help !!!

I'm not totally discounting Indian, after contact .They would have still been around that part of Ohio(near a reservation) when my 2great grandfather was a young man.Out of "Curisoty'' what would a piece like that go for ?Thanks for the info.

My wifes parents moved to an RV (fulltime) several years ago after retirement and couldn't find room for this.It was totally black on the front and really dingey on the back.Well I washed it in Dawn dish soap and voila!Tried and tried researching this piece but struckout.Maybe someone here has insight as to a date and value of this, presuming its authenticity. I really don't know what building is depicted on this stone. Thanks !!!

Thought I would throw this one out since my last post was such a positive experience. It's an old wooden hammer that was from my great-grandmothers estate. She had told me  (back in the early 60s ) that it was given to her father by an Indian But in the next breath she told me the same Indian taught her how to fly.I was about 6 or so .......I think she went to live in a ''nice home ''shortly after that.Hey,she was well into 80s by then. But I think it maybe just a farm made tool .It does show saw marks .If anyone has a guess at this one age ,value it would be of help .Thanks

Thanks sapphire ! That's as close as I've seen so far!I bet I"ve spent at least the better part of 6 months (on and off ) trying to figure out my figurines .They mean so much to me ,as they were a gift to my mother ,from one of the locals she befriended, while working in Japan .I'm sure there will be a place in Heaven for you,Many thanks sapphire
