my mother purchased a beautiful black oak? double pedestal desk some years ago, which has been a focal point amongst her Victorian (probably early 1900-1920?) living room set (Gold velvet with carved rosette circular in centre of couch, similar rosette back on armless chair, and matched to a high-backed winged back chair- also has matching rosewood set of side tables with oval centre table ....value for resale also enquired for the purposes of selling with or without this desk mentioned -due to failing health) It has the following details and markings:
1. Black oak ? stained double pedesta desk has carved detail on legs which spiral towards the centre ( not all the same direction as in all to the left or all to the right)l with six drawers on the lower and two small drawers on each side of the top ( writing drawers probably for fountain pens, paper, envelopes, etc.) as a shallower centre drawer
2. Red leather inlay top with gold key edging about 1" pattern (probably gold )
3. Brass detailing is depicitive on handles which have a centre omega style handle on a detailed back plate which has early period (Early English or Victorian style) appearance
4. Each main drawer (6 lower only) have a centre plate made of brass which is inlaid, and marked on the first line with the name "Wilkinson&Co."
centre line reads "MAKERS", and third line reads "WHAMPCON"
5. The centre drawer has a number and carved name as well as the brass centre plate... to the left of centre is engraved "5393" and to the right of the centre plate is engraved "9 OLD BOND STREET"
6. On the top in between the four smaller drawers there is a four to five inch high gothic/early english style carved pattern that consists of four repeated patterns across (design about 1" thick carved in an open filigree style)
