Why do you collect antiques that old if age is not important?

Yes! If all we cared about was appearance and functionality, we could all get reproductions instead. They look the same, are usually  in better shape and normally cost less. :)

For the site I linked, it's best to join the forum and ask. Those people are really a wealth of knowledge on all things pertaintaing to old radios. :)

Your radio looks in beautiful condition and it's a bonus that it works well. However, very few old radios are worth much.  I have an oldie myself, a 1927 Rogers Batteryless beautiful floor model but it's not worth much either.

For the last word on value of just about any old radio, the place to go is http://www.antiqueradios.com/

Great ideas, all of them. I'll be hitting all the flea markets come spring. As for the etching cream, I've seen this used before and it does work well. :)

Cogar, I was kind of thinking that myself: Try to find an old beat piece that has an intact towel rack. Of course, the type of junk store where I purchased my stand are nearly a thing of the past now..

Oh well, it's been 30 years so I guess I'm not in a hurry! :)

Yes, I still love it after all these years, especially the handmade parts. It's a nice size and fits in perfectly with my antique dining room set!

@talesofthesevenseas - I could try begging my brother, who does some woodworking, to make the rack for me now that I know it originally had one. It might take some doing, since he sees no value in "old stuff" as he calls it. :D

I have a 1927 Eaton's catalogue. The prices seem hilarious by today's standards but when you consider the average wage then, things didn't cost any less!

I have an old radio that in 1928 sold for over $325. The average wage in that period was about $1400 a year, so that radio was incredibly expensive.

Wow, I just checked and there ARE screwholes in the back! Wish I could find a towel bar to add to it. Yours is gorgeous, and I see it had wooden drawer pulls too. Did those come with it? Makes me feel better about the ones I added.

I was living in a 3-room apt at that time and doing the refininishing job was very messy! :D

Thanks for the info and the compliment!

I got this piece 30 years ago in a junk store and paid 10$. It was covered in 3 layers of paint, which I stripped. The joints in the drawer and the feet definitely look handmade.

It seems the right size to be a washstand. Anyone guess at what kind of wood this is, and how old it might be?

The only thing I added were the wooden knobs, as it came with ugly brass ones someone had put on.

Not sure when I'll ever see the back,  :D but here's a few shots from different angles:

Thanks for the welcome sapphire! :)

This cabinet and finish is in near pristine condition, the one exception being a crack on one top side panel. The carvings are impeccable with no wear at all.

It's funny but when my husband brought it home (without consulting me!) I really disliked it I think because of the somewhat massive size. But it's grown on me and is my favorite piece now!

I hope someone can help. I would dearly love some history on it.

I've had this cabinet since '84. I absolutely love it, but know zero about it. I guess I would love to know approx. how old it is and maybe where it comes from..it's 8' high and 4.5' wide. It seems to be all original, including the shelves inside the top part, and the wrought iron key. The carving of the head is quite thick and it's wearing a helmet.

Any info or guesses at all would be greatly appreciated! :)
