You are right.  G.A. Glafey seems to still be around http://www.glafey.com/

"Since 1808, the company Glafey produced at its plant in Nuremberg. Glafey products, such as our night lights and tea lights are produced for decades in an unchanged form and quality. By using high quality raw materials and their processing with some of its own, special manufacturing methods, we achieve a consistent high quality."

So it's their centennial.

here is a newer version of the same product.   http://cgi.ebay.ca/MADE-GERMANY-FLOATING-MINI-CANDLES-G-A-GLAFEY-MIP-/400222342497?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d2f1c4d61#ht_744wt_1139

Thank you, now that I know what it's called I could find out more about it.

Found one on ebay without the sleeve that sold for $80, http://cgi.ebay.com/Loewenstein-Bronze-Match-Holder-SafeAshtray-Arts-crafts-/130448546066

Not bad for a $4 purchase.

Yes, I forgot to mention.  The bottom of the metal dated piece is cork.

All I know is that this is some kind of match holder.

It smells like brass.  Made in New York by M. Loewenstein.  The leather sleeve for the match book is made of leather and has a picture of Vienna (i think) on it.

Does anyone know more about things like this?  What they are called, what time frame they were used, anything?

It looks like a pendant.

What makes you think it is gold?  From the first picture it looks like the ring between the main piece and the thick circle isn't soldered, which typically means no gold.  Also, if it were gold, they would tend to not put metal behind the stone the save on using more gold than they need.

I could be wrong.  Do you have access or know someone with a gold test kit?

How much would something like this be worth?

It's a full box of night candles from 1908.  They appear to be German.

What exactly was their use?  They look like small wicks that float on top of oil?  I haven't been able to find much on them...

Thank you for taking a look.

I live in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.  This trunk was found in Cornwall, Ontario, which is an old city port city on the St. Laurence (founded 1784) and borders with the U.S.  It was probably bought at a garage sale by my grandmother from someone with French heritage, but the picture on the inside looks very eastern European to me.

The trunk measures about 32"L x 18"W x 19"H.

I cannot find a makers mark, but the bottom has " 3/300 " chalked on it  The " / " is very rounded, almost like " ) " (not sure if this stylistic rounded slash may give a hint as to country of origin).

I have this antique trunk and I am seeking as much information as possible about it. How old? What country? The profile of someone who would have owned this type of trunk? etc..

I think it is made from balsam (or similar type) of wood because it is extremely light.

The hinges and rivets look hand hammered.

Inside, it is lined with paper and has a picture in the middle of the lid.  Does this picture give any clues as to what country it was made in?

Please follow the links to see some pictures of it:
