Antique Questions Forum / Re: What is this ?

:) salt shaker , my grandma used about that much salt !

Well .. it is totaly hollow and the inside is pretty clean . From what i can reason , it was not meant to get hot or it would ruin the paint on it so its not a smoker of sorts . Dont think it was for rolling in the dirt .

Bed bug dispenser does make sence . I guessed it might be to roll out lime or chalk on grass for a sport of some kind . The grille is only about 2'' wide .

Or it could be used to put dirt on a clean floor ???

I have had this a long time . Its different and old and i figure its worth enough to buy the island of Hawaii you know as it probably came out of the ancient tombs of greece and belonged to the queen of the country , thats why i kept it . Its marked 'made in japan' on the bottom . Its pretty light .

All you need to do is look on ebay . I see them with prices from 30$ up to a basic 200$ . If selling local you need to price at your market value . I really like those myself . If i had one in my shop here in Idaho it might bring 35 to 50$ . People here are cheap !

I met the lady today who sold me the mirrors at another yard sale so i asked her what they were used for . She said they are '' gentlemans dresser mirrors '' the knobs were added and not original . I guess they hang on the wall and the knobs were a personal decorative decision .

Sounds good to me  ???

The knobs on the bottom only have ware on the bottoms . No sign of them being put into holes . The knobs unscrew and i see a rusty screw stud and a lighter area under the knob like they have been there forever . No plugged dowel holes . The metal part is a wall hanger , installed with vintage rusted screws looking like an original part also .
Alot of things like this show some signs of having 2 boards screwed to the back where that was mounted to a piece of furniture . These mirrors dont have those signs .

More idaho 'pickin' today . I found 2 of these mirrors . One is slightly larger and has porcelain knobs on it . This one has wood knobs . Both have beautifull colored inlays . One guy said they are old commode mirrors ?? . I would like to know their actuall use and aprox age .

Again this group amazes me . I had never heard of a 'thumb piano' before , but it looks like that is what i have here in home made form . Yes the metal pieces do come out , in fact they want to fall out . Its a miracle they are all here .

Mart ... I go to yard sales . I also run a repair/second hand shop . This one was brought in by a young guy just out of the blue . I have several old things around my shop and am known to like-fix-buy-sell wierd/interesting stuff .

I noticed that link explained how the tines were arranged . I will study that more and maybe fix this one up ? Its cool . Only a little dusting will be needed . I wonder if those symbols on it are foregn notes of some kind .

Thanks again for the help .

By looking at the links provided it looks like we have a real ''qinqin'' here . You people are great !! ... It had no strings on it when i got it at a yard sale where i paid 1$ for it . I cant play an instrument but have a liking for them anyway . The strange ones are more intersting .

It looks alot like samisen or is it shamisen ? i see it spelt both ways . I did a bunch of looking around about these and it seems the samisen has no frets and a squared pillow shapped body . Mine has frets . I suppose it could be a '' novelty '' samisen of some kind . The huge tuning knobs are funny . Its unique and interesting . I got some nylon folk guitar strings to put on it .

Thanks for the help !
