Antique Questions Forum / Re: Pyrographed Pattern?
« on: August 11, 2011, 01:16:58 pm »
Thanks for that info, Ironlord. Are there any other names? Or is this just not a common practice so there's no info to be found? It may be hard to see in my photo due to wear on the finish (and my amateur photography skills) but the "burned" areas are textured while the adjacent surface is smooth. Also, in real life, there isn't so much contrast between the two areas as it looks in the photo.

Yes, Mart - it's the same table that came from Norway. The link I posted to Revival Antiques has their table posted under Spanish Revival, Mediterranean and European Antiques and says it is from the 1920s. Beings mine came to the US around 80 or so years ago from Norway, it seems likely to be from the same time period. Although the woman brought it with her from Norway, I guess it doesn't have to actually be of Norwegian design, however.

Is this a pyrographed pattern on my hexagon table top? Is there another name for it? I can only find one table that is even remotely like mine (more ornate and in MUCH better condition - http://www.revivalantiques.com/beautiful-1920s-hexagonal-table-i-3502.html) and it says the pattern is pyrographed. But a search for pyrographed pattern just gets me standard woodburning rather than anything like my table. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the link, Sapphire! I actually looked at every photo on that site yesterday but there wasn't one of my pattern. Fortunately, I found Jeff at the Southern Potteries website - http://www.southernpotteries.com/ - and sent him a photo. He confirmed that I indeed have "Mayflower" and even told me the mfg month and year (Oct 1955) based on a number I didn't even notice on the backstamp. And he's even modified my photo so he can post it on his site for others. This is so much fun!

Thanks for the responses, ironlord1963 and gardenspotgal. I've been online looking throughout the day and think that I've got the "Mayflower" pattern. I just looked at nearly 2,000 Blue Ridge Pottery pictures on eBay and several hundred more on a few other sites earlier today and found a handful of pieces with the same flower design. A few of those say they're Mayflower so unless one person said so and the rest copied, I guess that's the official pattern name. I've also sent emails to two Blue Ridge Pottery experts for confirmation. Whew! Who knew this could become so all-consuming? ;)

I've got a set of Blue Ridge pottery - 4 each plates, bowls, saucers and cups. I've been online for hours trying to ID the pattern with no success. I've looked at hundreds of pictures but none are like mine. So is mine so common as to not merit any photos or what? Anyway, any ideas on pattern name, date it was made, etc? I think I've discovered that the shape is called "Skyline" but that's as much as I can determine for sure. Here's a photo of the plate and a shot of the backstamp.

The top is a single thickness with 1/4 inch deep grooves (I just measure with a ruler) cut across the under-side. Look closely at the photo and you'll see that they do not go all the way across to the points of the hexagon. In the center are 3 pairs of grooves with 4 single grooves on either side. I've wondered about them myself - not sure what the purpose might be. Anyone have ideas?

Ok - here's a picture of the top. Guess I should have polished it first - oops. And the rosy glow is reflection from the curtain in the background - the true color is what's seen at the bottom of the picture. Also, I got a shot of the bottom and a close-up of the remains of a label of some sort.

I got this hexagon side table almost 30 years ago from an elderly neighbor, who said she brought it as a new bride from Norway at least 50 years before that. It measures about 29 inches across and about 29 inches high and is dark wood with ornamentation etched around the outer part of the top surface. The six legs are somewhat decorative but connected to one another with straight pieces. I'd like to find out more about it - origin, style, date, value. I've been searching without success. I guess beings I'm new to all this, I don't know what terms to use to get useful search results. Anyway, any help or direction anyone here can provide will be much appreciated. Thanks!
