Antique Questions Forum / Sterling 6-piece Salt & Pepper Set
« on: July 20, 2012, 12:50:52 pm »
I can't find a set like this anywhere. It's Black, Starr & Frost. Set includes 2 shakers, 2 cellars and 2 small spoons. Bottom says "Black, Starr & Frost New York Sterling 18" I am wondering if anyone knows the value or can steer me in the right direction. Thank you!

Wow! That is amazing, I had absolutely no idea. The Inuits used them a lot for skinning salmon so KC was on the right track. Wish I had the blade or whatever item was used in this particular handle. Can anyone guess the era?

Antique Questions Forum / Re: Antique Strong Box?

Sorry hosman, this is probably one of my FAVORITE antiques. My family has always to referred to it as the "ballot box" but I have never been able to confirm that, hence the post here. I believe that my grandfather brought this from Europe but I'm not sure. Thanks everyone for your input...keep it coming.

I don't know what this is or what it is made of. Bone, ivory? It's 5.5" long and it's very heavy. The hole is about 1/2" deep. Can anyone tell me anything about this? Thank you.

Thanks for your time ironlord. Do you think it's Hopi? That info would help so I can dig a little deeper.

Thanks everyone. KC, the inside of the lid is reinforced with metal in the area behind the metal (cast iron?) on the other side. Same thing on the inside behind the locking area. The only other metal on the inside is the hardware. What I don't get is, what could be so fragile and/or important to require such a strong, locked box? Gold, money? This is why I thought it may be some sort of strong box, like what you'd see on a stage coach. Maybe someones personal safe for travel? I dunno. Just a thought? Anyone want to guess what era?

Can anyone tell me if this is a strong box. Maybe an antique ballot box? It's only about 11" square. Key is long gone. Would love to know how old it is or anything else about it. Thanks!

As I thought, there are no markings on any of the pieces. The items appear to be colored from the inside. Also, if you look closely you can see a leaf pattern in the glass. Hope this helps. Thanks again.

Antique Questions Forum / Hollow Spoon?
« on: September 19, 2011, 04:40:19 pm »
Have another item that's got me scratching my head. The spoon handle is hollow and measures about 5" long. I can't identify the hallmark but it looks like it's made in Mexico. Anyone know what this spoon is for? Is it a spoon for olives? Geeeez....I need a martini. Thanks in advance.
