Antique Questions Forum / Re: small tiffany favrille glass vase
« on: October 04, 2011, 02:21:19 pm »
I just looked up a bit more info. on signatures, labels, etc. for Tiffany glass.  It's said that a forged signature would be acid etched and an original engraved.  If the signature on the bottom is fairly smooth (any depth is negligible) would this mean that I unfortunately have a forgery?  I know my grandfather gave it to my grandma at least 60+ years ago -- so I don't know if that helps determine if it might be original.  I would love to have it appraised but I live in a small town quite a distance from any city of substance but I really do not want to give it to my niece only to find out it is a fake!?!

:-[ I didn't read the bottom etching correctly.  It is L.C.T. (not G) also, there is a capital letter B after the 5069.  I'm adding another picture that I hope might give a better idea of the color.  Other than the gold of the design it is an iridescent light and dark green.  Hoping this might help in a date or value.  Also, does anyone know about the sticker?  I haven't seen any that have one.  Julie

HI -- I was hoping someone could help with the value of this vase.  It's quite small - only about 2.5 inches at it's widest and 2 inches tall.  Besides the sticker there is also etched the numbers 5069 and the initials L.G.T.  I'm pretty sure it is not worth alot(?).  But I want to give it to my little niece so any info. on the vase (would the design be considered a "pulled feather"?) and/or its value I can pass along to her would be fabulous.  Thanx!!

Antique Questions Forum / Soapstone seal/stamp translation and care of
« on: October 02, 2011, 01:51:01 pm »
I have two East Asian/Chinese soapstone seals/stamps - one is a yin and the other is a yang - I know that these generally state a family or personal name, where they are from, etc. or a saying or proverb --can anyone translate either of these?  Also, I think the carvings on each are a pair of dogs (pugs?) - does anyone know the significance of?  And lastly, I read on several sites that the way to care for soapstone is to clean using mineral oil - as you can probably see from the photos, I tried this - the problem is that after a day or so they appear almost dried out (something that was not a problem until after I used the mineral oil) - Anyone with other ideas on how to clean or preserve?  Any info. would be appreciated!!

I also read the same info. about cleaning metal works from the "Antiques Roadshow".  I purchased the recommended micro-crystalline wax polish (Renaissance) and tried it on a small spot but it didn't work to polish it up at all.  I'm also afraid I might just be sealing in the dirt and grime.  Honestly at a loss as to what to do --- they honestly look terrible -- really dirty.

Made a mistake ... actually meant spelter not pewter.  They are Jennings Brothers statues and my understanding is they were made of cast metal or spelter.  Hope this helps.  Thanks.

I have several different cast metal/pewter statues.  For years each sat atop mantel of grandfather's fireplace.  There is build up of what I can best describe as "crud".  I have tried to clean using soapy water along with soft bristle brush.  Didn't work at all.  I'm afraid to use any over the counter ('brasso', etc) cleaners.  Short of scraping it up (which does in fact work [tried it on a tiny spot] but am afraid would ultimately cause damage) how do I remove this?  I've attached a couple of picts to try and show what it is I'm referring to.  Thank you to anyone who can help.
