Antique Questions Forum / Re: German Beer Stein - help identify
« on: November 15, 2011, 09:19:27 am »
The number 1646 is the mold number / model number. Has no relation whatsoever to it's production date, which, indeed is after WW-2.
Steins can be quite expensive, and there is a good market for high quality or rare items. This is not in that category. But it still will look nice on a mantlepiece, I'm sure. Enjoy it!

Hello Bob,

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but neither of the 3 steins are Mettlachs (or better said: produced by Villeroy & Boch in Mettlach, Germany).

The one marked "Made in West Germany" obviously dates from after WW-2 and is not considered an antique stein. The mark you describe sounds similar to a company called Eckhard & Engler. The one with the price tag is antique, produced around 1890-1910. The music stein has most likely been produced after 1945 for the tourist en export industry and thus found it's way to the States.
The one with the transfer print shows a typical farmer's scene. I do not have enough information on that one yet to give you an idea of when it was made and by whom.

If you have pictures of the base markings I may be able to identify them better for you.

Prosit!
Paul

I am "the guy that made that post on that site ", as a matter of fact I am the webmaster of that site.
Your stein has a value on eBay of around 60 to 80 dollars, in my opinion. Could do a bit better on a good day, though, you never know. :)

Antique Questions Forum / Re: Okay, how about this beer stein?

Hello hudsonhacker,

The design of your stein dates to around 1900-1920. It was produced by either Reinhold Merkelbach, Simon Peter Gerz or Reinhold Hanke. There may be clues to the manufacturer on the base.
These 3 producers sold their own steins, but they also worked together for a number of years in a sales consortium called Steinzeugwerke. Steinzeugwerke is known to have sold many steins and related items to the States in the early part of the 20th century.
I agree that at 5 dollars it was a snip, so enjoy it!
Your model is also listed online here: http://www.mysteincollection.com/catalogue/view_item.php?art_ID=2640
