Antique Questions Forum / what are these small stone bullet looking things?
« on: November 08, 2012, 09:48:52 am »
i came across a box of smalls at an antique auction and at the bottom of the box were these 4 old stone objects. to me, they look like bullets, but i dont beleive that can be so. two of them appear to have been smashed and the other two are still in good condition. the two in tact objects prove they are not molded but more likely formed by hand, the holes in the bottom are different sizes and the lines on the sides are not exactly the same. there are two groved lines going around each one and a small hole in the bottom. does anyone have any sort of clue what they are? it has been plaguing me for a while now. thanks in advance!

when you look down into the hole, does it appear to have been worn at all, as if it were a mortar from a pestle and mortar? or does it seem even, clean, and not worn? that information should help as well.

my thoughts were electro plated on gorham silver. gorham made a lot of electro plated things, and is one of the most common names i see on silver plate items.

excellent thought frogpatch!!! i also get phishing emails from both paypal and ebay all the time! i would definitely check that out, ive never been asked for that information from ebay or paypal!

awesome! thanks for the advice frogpatch! i just took it to the jeweler to have it inspected and it is authentic, and whats better, its 100% original. even though the dial is pretty roughed up, its still valued at 200$. not my childrens college fund, but still awesome to find in a box at an auction which i only bought for the vintage wire rim glasses!

i found this watch in a box i bought at an estate sale. after searching longines, i found out its actually a high class brand. i did post it on ebay, but after giving it a second thought i need to make sure its authentic before it sells. i also could use help dating it. im not sure if the 1938 date on the back is a possible anniversary date or something. it could be earlier than 1938 and the date was added or it could be later than 1938. not sure. any tips on identifying if its real or fake? and any tips on dating it? im really precaucious to open it up because watches are so very delicate on the inside and id hate to ruin a valuable watch. thanks!

that is awesome! and valuable! just remember, when and if you decide to sell it, you can NOT ship it (at least via usps) and probably other shipping companys because of the mercury content. that is also why you didnt see any comps on ebay. you arent even allowed to sell mercury thermometers on ebay. try craigslist or a different site that allows it. good luck and you have an awesome peice!

even  if a magnet doesnt stick, it could still be plated. either a thick plate or a non-magnetic metal as a base. the rule of thumb is that if it doesnt have a 925 or any sterling mark on it, it is silver plated. UNLESS it is just that old. yours doesnt look that old and my guess is silver plate. even though usually silver plate still has a mark. the only test ive ever used to test silver or silver plate is with nitric acid. be vary careful and in an inconspicuous spot on the bottom, scratch a deep enough scratch where it would hit the base metal. take a dropper and place a SMALL drop on the scratched part. if it turns milky, it is sterling, if it turns red or green, it is plated. be very careful and where gloves. the acid WILL ruin the spot you put it on, so only do this if you dont mind if it gets ruined or if you test it in enough of an inconspicuous place that it doesnt matter. hope this helps, and dont forget if you dont want it to ruin, dont test with nitric acid.

hi, ive been a member for a while now and while i dont post too much (because im not an expert by any means in much of the antique world, i love to look through the "new" posts and learn! i dislike seeing the advertising ads, but its not much of a burden to look past them as long as it doesnt become filled with them. i also realize you have made the decision to delete these posts before i am even posting this, but in regards to one of the other comments, it wouldnt be terrible to see an events/for sale category but on the other hand, if you are wanting to go to an event, youd probably have better luck on craigslist than this forum. sorry for the late input, but wanted to share my two cents

just be sure that its not a reproduction tray, which today at least half i see are. it usually says reproduction on it in very small print usually right under the outer rim of the tray.

i come across alot of trunks and to be honest yours doest look as old as most i see. while in collectors value painting it loses its value, most trunks are bought by common folk for other purposes ie: dress up clothes chests, blanket chests, etc. in this case its better to be painted than look like a turn off. id guess its worth about 50$

that looks very nice. the screws look relatively early and at the price its at right now it may be a steal! good luck!
