Antique Questions Forum / Re: english marks

Youare just confusing yourself...the X mark on the item, is,nt in an oval...the Edinburgh X is in an oval, ..furthermore, if this was an Edinburgh mark..then..i think the X would be foremost....from the link i,ve given i,d have to say, the B.G in the oval..is obviously the makers mark, followed by the anchor which is the Birmingham mark, then the lion...which, i,m unsure of..then the X which is the date mark...

And!!...your question is?.....what is it used for.....well, its a baling hook...over here in Scotland, they were used when unloading bales of Jute,..my home town.of Dundee, was during the late 1800,s and well into the mid to late 1900,s..the Jute processing capital of the world...and down at the docks this kind of hook was an essential tool,of a stevedore...thats a longshoreman in the US...when bales of jute were unloaded, over in the US...it would be used on cotton bales,.....or hay bales,....

It's not uncommon to have pine and oak tables.
why am i not surprised.... ::)..i know its not..in fact i,m sitting at one that has a pine core with a mahogany exterior...but the pine is only used as a strengthener.....bu t then you already knew that...seeing as how you,ll be a  master carpenter of bespoke furniture....

I found out what he is.  RELIQUARY GUARDIAN FIGURE  African.  Was attached to a box at a funeral.  Would be very sweet if he is in the same company as these  http://www.christies.com/LotFinder/searchresults.aspx?action=search&searchtype=p&searchFrom=auctionresults&entry=RELIQUARY%20GUARDIAN%20FIGURE

Not the same quality or age unfortunately !

see if this e-mail address still works. Let me know if not

I just sent her a picture and it hasn't been bounced back.  So it hopefully still works.    You have to admit my figure has personality...lol
i,d agree with you there...unlike the  doubtful Dinah,s.... ;D

wow icedgold aren't you just excited thinking it could be?   How did you find him?
I know hoping that he is in that same class is wishful thinking but I'm a dreamer.  Always look at the cup half full but even some of the lesser ones I saw ran around $800-$1200  so it is a win either way where I only paid $4.99 for him at a Goodwill.  Interesting things at those stores sometimes.  LOL
depending on which way you look at ....a half full cup..could be a half empty cup . ;D

it could be  any of whats already been said on the previous post, regarding what it is and what it could hold....out of all the answers you,ve had, i,d have to say, KC,s was the most likely...its an Ampullae....which is used for carrying, water, oil, holy water,...etc...value...where it came from..probably pennies...here...wh at ever anyone is prepared to give you....

i,ve just looked at hundreds..if not thousands of Peacock chairs.and none of them ..remotely resemble this one....which makes me think...it might be,   a something else kind of chair.....

I know that flask believe me there were many types of flasks. I have many.
Oh!!.....i know that..an bet they are all full of !Mothers Ruin"...and yer fridge is full of Tonic...bottles.... ;D

we,d all like to do that, but sometimes the economics of it all far outweighs whats best,...as..it always boils down to how much is this going to cost....its ok if the store is close by, but, if its a good distance away, then your time, fuel costs have to be factored in...mind you..you pay a pittance for your gas...so maybe travelling is ok...but..if you had to pay $10+ a gal, then ..somehow i think your fingers would be doing the driving....
