Again, thanks!  I will look closer and, perhaps, add more pictures to get some advice as to restore or not to restore. . .

It's good to BE back!  I have missed you all!

I don't believe it has been repainted, but will examine it more carefully this weekend.  (The trunk is in our guest room and we currently have guests!)  I will also look for a manufacturers mark at that time.

I hand't thought about restoring it, as I don't mind the look that it currently has.  Additionally, I thought restoring antiques usually devalues them.  Is that correct?  I know so little. . .  :-\

Hello all!  It's been a long time since I have visited the forum and hope that this inquiry finds you all well!

A little while ago, I purchased an adorable little trunk from a local antique dealer.  Unfortunately, there I seem to be getting conflicting information about the trunk.  I was wondering if someone might be able to provide me a little additional information about the trunk.

It is a small trunk, with a stamped (?) metal exterior.  It has leather side handles, and tiny wheels on the bottom of the trunk.  There is a tray inside which appears to have had a covered side, but the cover is missing.

I have included some pictures.  I did not have a tape measure handy, but included a double bed foot board as a reference point.  If measurements are needed, I would be most happy to track down my wayward tape measure to provide the info.

Thanks again for your assistance.

Hello!  I have come across a pair of large (approx. 20" tall) Beckwith China lamps.  They were my husband's grandmother's, but they just don't do anything for us.  I have checked eBay only to find prices ranging from $20 to $200 for a pair of lamps.  These aren't quite like the ones I have seen, so I thought I would seek outside opinions before I donate them to Goodwill.  Sell or Goodwill?

Thanks for your insights.

I don't know why, but I can't help but thinking about Sweeney Todd every time I see these straight razors!  ;)

As always, thank you all so much!  I think they will look great mounted on black velvet, in a shadow box behind my grandfather's barber chair!

You all are the best!

Hi KC!  It's good to hear from you again!

This object is just shell and whistle. . . no rattle.  I have seen the older vintage rattles (and absolutely love them), but not one quite like this.  As I mentioned the old rumor in the family is that it was a bosan's whistle or a slave whistle.

Any idea of how old?  I know my grandmother (and I am 52) had it and gave it to my father.  However, she only knew the rumors of its use.

Again, good to "hear" from you!

Hello all!

Any information about the age of these straight razors or the composition of the handles?  They were my maternal grandfathers.  I have his barber chair as well, so needless to say, I am quite sentimental about them.

Thanks for your help.

Hello again!  It's been a while and I have missed the bantering and advise of the members of this forum!  I hope all is well with those I have shared messages with in the past!

I have come across a little item that has been in our family for quite a while.  Rumor has it that it might have been a bosan's whistle.  I have seen some similar to this that were baby pacifiers.  I have also been told that it might have been a whistle used to summon slaves.  (My father's not-so-distant ancestors were from the south).

I would greatly appreciate your advice and thought on this little piece.  It appears to be shell of some kind, with a silver whistle top.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Merry Christmas, Mart!  It's been too long since we last "chatted"!  I hope life is treating you kindly!

Thanks for the link.  It is definately a Boyd's piece.  With your help, I was able to find a picture of the little trinket box on eBay.

Here is the link.  It is such a cute little thing!

Certainly no "rare find", but as I have learned from all of you here, if it brings joy to your heart, it is money well spent!

Again, thank you for your direction.  Have a happy New Year full of blessings!

Antique Questions Forum / Uranium Dioxide Glass Dish
« on: December 24, 2012, 07:52:50 pm »
I was out "antiquing" with my family today, and came across a very cute little heart shaped dish (uranium dioxide).  It had a B in the center of a diamond (not a diamond like ring diamond, diamond like a two pyramids base-to-base) stamped on the bottom of the dish.  I have tried to find the name of the company that made the little dish, but am not having any luck.  I KNOW I am supposed to provide pictures, but I left without my cell phone (OMG)!  Anyway, any help in giving me some idea where to look would be greatly appreciated!

To all of you who have been so kind and gracious in the past, a very Merry Christmas to you all!

I would not tumble any old valuable bottle !!  Tumbling in sand polishes the surface !! Its OK if you are going to keep it but if value matters,, I wouldn`t !!

Thanks, Mart.  Some of the bottle still have residual dirt left in/on them.  Should that be left as well?
