Antique Questions Forum / Re: Help with Writing on Miniature Portrait
« on: August 25, 2017, 03:46:24 pm »
Thank you both! I have posted this in other places, too, and I think so far the reading is sure for "Miniature by Florence ????????, Ashen Croft studio, Ilkley, Yorks(hire), just the last name of the artist still remains a mystery. I have searched, but no miniature painter from Ilkley turned up so far...

I thought it looks like:

Miniature by Florence Honeille
Asken Groff Studio
Glenley, York

Or something like that.

Just picked up these two guys and would like to find out some history on them. Any help is appreciated.

The first one definitely looks African.
Do a search on Pinterest for African Masks and you'll see plenty like that.

Posting for a friend. He found this while cleaning out a house, estate. Came inside a very worn leather pouch. Does this seem legit? Or is it just a copy? May need to be looked at in person. But. I was wondering if anyone ever came across something like this before. Thank you.

Looks totally authentic to me.  I imagine that the ground might also be parchment and not paper as there is no decay and paper that old having been folded would more than likely show some disintegration.

I really don't have a lot of information.  He had a factory in Dobromil which is about 20 miles from Przemysl, and a shop in Przemysl to sell his work.  From what I gather they lived above his shop on one of the main streets in Przemysl.  (I actually was able to get photos of the building.  If I find them I can post them later).  He was married to Bronia Sperling and had two sons with her.  The elder became a Dr. and the younger, my grandfather, moved to Vienna, got married and probably started selling the porcelain there, but eventually grew into selling kitchen ware (stoves etc...).  He had a showroom on one of the main avenues.
Max was born in a town not too far from Przemysl in what is now western Ukraine known as Sambor.  This region changed hands many many times throughout history.  At that time is was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire.  It was historically also known as Galicia.  His father, David, I was told was a doctor, but I've not been able to verify that through research.  David was born in what is now eastern Ukraine, in a town called Brody.
I've learned a lot about extensions of the family, but not more about the porcelain and glass business.  I'm hoping to visit the region to do more research in person.
One interesting anecdote is that Max's grandson, my father's cousin, also became a porcelain designer and manufacturer. His son, my second cousin, continues the tradition.
Genes!

I've posted on this site a few times in search of porcelain made by Max Rosenberg in Przemysl (aka Premissel), Poland.

There was one piece described by and OP here, whom I couldn't track down as it was many years since the original post.  Other posters also had information but same issue, they had come and gone.

With good fortune, a couple of months ago I happened upon a piece on Ebay, and it also happens to be the very piece the original OP had posted about.  It is now in my happy possession.

If you have any further information or leads to Max's work, I would be very appreciative.

Needles to say, if anyone comes across any more of his work, please contact me if you remember.
I'd be much appreciative.

Yes, well I did post about this a few years ago....searching for one of your sellers who had mentioned Max's work.
Anyway, now a little success.  Thanks.
Cheers.

Someone signed on as a guest-D & B Antiques in the 2000s.
Does anyone know who this is, have you seen them recently here,
or do you have any contact leads for this person?
Thanks.

Hi Mart,
Well, basically I'm just interested in finding more information on Max, and/or his works.
Interestingly I came across a company today in Poland who is using his name... "ROSENBERG - PORZELLAN. "Our logo and name is a legally protected trademark Polish Patent Office decision. In spite of strong competition our Products find very big interest in Poland, as well as in EU, the US and Canada".    Posted by the same person is also a company name, "Rosenberg-Kierat".  Then in another source it says the company was founded by someone named Treadmill in 1980.
Very mysterious.
Do you know any experts in Polish porcelain (and its history) you could point me towards?  I'm very interested in what happened to his company, and how it was formed.  He died in 1934, and then of course the war came in 1939.
Thanks in advance Mart,
Tanya
