:o WOW. That makes more sense, guess I wasn't searching for the correct piece.  There are some screw holes in the back of this piece.  We thought that it was for some back stop or something.  Guess they could be used for securing some burners.  The tables in the 80's were I similar in the wood and the heavy tops were coated in a durable black paint.  There are voids under the top which very easily could be for piece of slab wood for writing.

Thank You!

Hello everyone!  I am looking for a little more info on which has got to be my favorite piece.  This was in my grandfathers wood working shop for as long as I can remember.  After he died I purchased it from the estate and did what I call a light restoration, it was covered in paint.  EH Sheldon now makes desks that you would find in your high school science class.  Or, at least that was what I found a few years ago.  From what I was told this was a shoe shine table.  Can anyone identify this piece?  www.photbucket.com/ehsheldonco

Thanks

Ok everyone, I finally had a chance to get some more pics taken.  I have uploaded these to the same photobucket link.  I also too some measurements of everything.  They are as follows.

Headboard overall width - 55-3/4",  inside - 52-3/8", sideboard flange to inside of headboard - 1"
                 Height - 85" see pic
Footboard overall width - same as headboard, sideboard flange to inside of footboard - 2-3/4"
                 Height - 37" see pic
Sideboard  overall length - 73-5/8"

So it looks like it will fit a mattress up to 52" x 72"

Thanks everyone for the input.

ghopper Thank you for the input.  I will get pictures the top and side rails this weekend.  I was using a full size mattress until I upgraded to a queen size.  I woke up many mornings with my feet hanging off the end of the bed.  But, thanks for the tip I will take some measurements this weekend.  Here is the ebay link,

I brought this to Illinois from South Carolina about 7 or 8 years ago.

Thank you all for the help!

I inherited what I think is a Victorian Renaissance bed.  I have been looking all over the net and can't find anything like it.  Can anyone give me anymore information on this.  The closest thing I could find, the dealer was asking for $12,500.  Mine is not as ornate as what theirs was. The arch top sets on the headboard making it around 6.5 to 7 feet tall. The side boards are not in as nice of shape as the rest but still very usable.  At some point they were extended to accept a full size mattress.
