Antique Questions Forum / Re: UNIQUE ANCIENT PERSIAN DISH VERY RARE
« on: January 27, 2013, 09:59:39 pm »
Hey guys! Great forum! so happy to have found it.

Ok here it is... 6 inches in diameter, 0.75 inches in depth. My science teacher told me it's made out of tin. The writing is in the old persian language. I'm Armenian, I have persian friends but none of them can read what it says. It's been in my family for many generations. It was given to my grandmother (r.i.p. <3) who lived in Syria so the origins are completely legit.

She said:
It is written in reverse so I cannot make out what it says
Just the date 1211 can be read.
Hugs P

So flip the picture so she can read it

*note the writing is reversed in the picture. sorry don't know how to fix it

Is the writing reversed or is the picture upside down.

the minute this picture was published on here..it became the public property...
Funny you should say that.. My sister in law posted a bunch of what she thought were sexy( embarrassingly bad) and private ( not for anyone who could hack into her account)  pictures of herself on the old myspace. I found them, right clicked them and now they are mine and who ever else I choose to share that mess with....
Back to the subject..let me show my friend the pictures. I'll  let you know what she says

Thats about the value at best here in the U.S !!

I paid $5.00 and was pissed I had to pay that much at a thift shop.

I am finding that thrift stores are charging pretty high prices these days especially when they don't seem to take into account condition.  At our thrift store right now, they have a Penguin ice bucket which they want $20 for.  The wood handles are in poor condition.  I was at a MCM shop last week & they had one in beautiful condition for $25.

I sell china tea cups & saucers for $7 each, most of the Thrift stores charge $10+

Yeah, suddenly the Salvation Army fancies itself an antique shop and the prices shoot up sky high. They generally have no clue what they have and will put a high price on something frilly looking while they  overlook a good piece of vintage pottery. We have a place where the price depends on Herbs mood. You can usually pile stuff in the counter and he will tell you, oh give me $3. That store rocks

A friend of mine is from Persia ( she prefers calling it that over Iran)  If you don't mind can I copy your picture and ask her what it might say or maybe one of her friends or family can

Looks like a late Victorian shaving mug.  Not much value these days I'm afraid.

Thanks...it's still a nice piece with a bit of history

Why do you think this is a New England pottery ?? Can you tell what the small letters top and bottom of the diamond are ??

The top says "Stone" the bottom "China"

They are very poorly done and in no particular style, so guessing the age would be difficult !!  My guess would be late 60`s import somewhere around the time of the Mediterranean craze !!  Spelter or white metal is very heavy !! Quality pieces would not be painted and peeling !! To tell good from bad,, look at the decorative part, see how shallow the impression is ?? Lines are not crisp and sharp and look like a kid with a crayon drew them !!
Just google art nouveau candlesticks and use google images to look at how some of the nice ones were done !!

I know the Mediterranean crazy you're talking about . It was more early to mid 70s. I know, I was there at the time and remember the homes that were decorated that way. The picture  I inserted was typical of that style. Most had plastic "wood" inserts for decorations and lots of black iron, too.

Not to argue and perhaps they are  cheap  & poorly done but they aren't  from the 60s. Actually the impression goes right into the underside.  I can see why the other poster said they were two pieces, maybe from my picture but they are just one piece.

I called my mother who gave them to me and she remembers them from her grandfathers as a kid place in Hartford Connecticut at least back in the 1930s .

But thanks for your opins, anyway. I guess need to learn to take better photos

Just has crazing but no breaks crack or chips on it
mark is from 1883-1886

4" high
3" across the top
about 5" at its widest

I doubt very much that they are made of lead...especially.. with them being..candle holders...lead as you probably know has a low melting point...i,d be more inclined to say they are spelter..which can be a zinc/copper alloy...also known as poor mans bronze...they have been cast...
Thank you. I'm from "the South" we say "molded"  :D Is there anyway from the picture that you could tell around how old they might be or are they something you have to put a hand on?
I mentioned lead as they are heavy for the size of them, but you said it better
