Cogar, that is a very good link to copper use. Most attribute the early use of it to the "Old Copper Culture or Complex" at 6000 years ago or in the 4000 B.C. range in Michigan and close proximity. However in other later cultures such as the Hopewell (500 B.C. to 500 A.D.) copper spread by trade through much of the central US. We have found artifacts here in Central Illinois on those type sites.

Mart, interesting that you brought up "flint or stone fish hooks". Among artifact collectors that is a can of worms so to speak. This has been debated heavily (and frequently!) on artifact forums and general consensus is that they are modern creations that found there way into older collections. These things were big in the 30's and 40's. Stone hooks  have also never been documented as found in a controlled archaeological dig. Prehistoric Fish hooks do exist with the preferred materials being copper and bone. I am including links to a couple discussions from the past. By the way. I am rmartin  on these forums.

Interesting about the age although worth is quite something else. Here in Illinois I have been told it is illegal to sell a used mattress. Most resalers here sell a frame and give the rest away

The one that has not been ID'ed is Norfolk and Western, N&W. I think KC has pretty much nailed the value, the top end for those sold locally to the RR

Hey Ray,, how are things up there ??  You know I forgot to ask if these were leather !!  My grand father also used one for his straight razors,,,and a few other things !!  Or at least we got threatened with one !!
Doing well Mart! Wow, I knew this one and beat you to it :D. Although I never felt its wrath, I was threatened  with one of these a few time also.

I can remember my father using one of these back in the early 50's to sharpen a straight razor. They are called a Razor strap(strop)

Thanks Cogar. I have seen this...it is all over the Artifact forums I am on. Here is another link to the story with a home video of some of his collection. It kinda creeps me out that he had human remains in his basement including a complete skeleton. No bones in my house! I have heard there is a whole lot more to this story also.

Everyone wants them today to hold cooking oil,,after sterilization of course !! Gourmet chefs on TV started that trend !!
I didn't know they were being used for that today but I do know they disappear from vendors as fast as they are put out.

I remember them still being used in 1967 when I got my first car. My old '41 Chevy drank a lot of them.
