We are new to the antique scene and have found a dinning set we are interested in.  The set includes a table with two pull out extensions, six chairs, a vitrine and a buffet server.  The wood appears to be unstained due to its light color.  In addition I am guessing it is oak because of the pattern of the grain. The joinery on the drawers have a three uneven dovetail construction. The only damage to the items appears to be a slightly worn table top and a leg on the table that has a two and a half inch vertical split on the thickest part of the design.  We are looking to pay about $1800 for the set... is that a reasonable amount and how would it be best to repair the damage or prevent it from getting worse?

Greetings, I'm new to the antique world, but experienced in woodworking and cabinet making.  I may have a find on my hands, but I'd like to stick some feelers out to get a gauge from some experts.  Here's a description of the product...

Furniture Type: Buffet with hutch (plate holding rail across full width)
Wood: Chestnut
Finish: Hand rubbed wax, nice patina, feels like a few hard thin layers
Size: about 48" wide, 92" tall, 25" deep
Year: 1896
Style: Brittany
Carvings: Detailed carvings covering the work, Giant flowers on each of the side raised panels, Extremely detailed relief carvings depicting a short man and a variety of other people on the four doors, 3d carving of people for the pillars holding up the hutch
Joinery: Double dovetail on both front and back of the drawers, very tight, no noticeable separation, all other joints tight
Defects: Minor split on vertical panel..only noticeable from the back and repaired by an excellent craftsman (no nails)
Asking price: $2000

Any thoughts or advice you can offer are appreciated.

Thanks
