The symmetry of the pattern looks north african or middle eastern. Have a look at moroccan bowls in google.

Antique Questions Forum / Bronze Winged Maiden lamp - JB
« on: February 14, 2014, 01:42:02 pm »
I have acquired a bronze winged maiden lamp and would like to know a bit about its origins. I guess it is either late Victorian or early Edwardian. It is signed JB but I cannot find a match for he signature. The nearest I can find is the Jennings Brothers but it does not match up to the picture of the signature s I have found so far. The lamp is cast in bronze, it is approx 2ft heigh, there are no other marks indicating the country to origin or its age. The maiden is riding an eagle. There is a crown that I guess used to sit on top of the glass lamp, the glass lamp is missing. I would also love to know what the glass looked like so that I can find a replacement.

Antique Questions Forum / Axel H Haig Picture Armiens Cathedral
« on: December 30, 2013, 11:57:44 am »
Any Idea of the value of an original print by Axel H Haig. It is from Robert Dunthorpe,  Print Publisher, 28 Castle Street, the picture is of the interior of Armiens Cathedral.

The item item has been described as a victorian cabinet with serpentine or S shaped glass doors. I do not have any photos and was trying to establish if a long trip was worth while. It seems that everything over 30 years old is now Victorian. If I can establish when curved glass doors first appeared I can at least decide on viewing the item or not.

« on: December 29, 2013, 05:29:40 pm »
I am trying to find out when wavy or serpentine glass first started to appear in european furniture?  I have been led up the garden path with mid Victorian to Edwardian. Are either of these correct or was it earlier?

Antique Questions Forum / Re: How to date furniture?

Looking at the pics and the info so far I agree it is from around the 1900's, not sure where it was made. Without a makers name, any other identifying marks and limited knowledge on my part it is pure guesswork and luck. I still haven't found the barcode or sell by date! I have scoured the internet for a similar table but none I have found so far have similar fretwork on the legs.
My next question is do I leave it as it is knowing it has no real value or do I strip it and restore it and remove the runs in the bad varnish job? It did not cost much and is intended to be used as a TV stand.

My original question was how to date the furniture? What draws you to these conclusions and what evidence do you have? Can you explain your process to get to your conclusion. I have have the advantage of being able to physically examine the table but not the knowledge or experience. The saw makes underneath go at 45 degrees to the wood grain and are straight and not circular saw marks. The screws holding it together are flat head screws, machine made and rusty, not hand cut. The table has been revarnished. The bottom of the legs have holes presumably for casters. The holes are off centre and would not have been used in the turning process. The wood planks used to make the top are of varying width 5 3/4, 9 1/4, 10 /3/4 and 4 1/4. The fretwork on the four legs is very similar with some slight differences but very minimal. The wood between the fretwork is black and and has not been revarnished.
