Antique Questions Forum / Help identify this 'box'?
« on: November 04, 2013, 11:53:55 am »
I purchased this 'box' at a local estate sale.  The previous owners obviously enjoyed traveling and had many 'oriental items' of varying types and ages.  I have done an exhaustive search online and have not found another item like this.  I realize that the shape is important but haven't seen another box shaped like this.  I have seen a few pieces with similar flowers, one was Japanese, the other Chinese.  There were many very old items at the estate sale.  I think that the box is pretty old.  Could anyone offer me any thoughts on how old it is, the country of origin or any other information?  I have more pictures available if they would help. Thanks!

Thank you, mart...I saw, in my initial research that Chris commented on an Art Deco Royal Bonn umbrella holder that someone posted a question about.  It would be great if I could get his assessment of this at some point!  Thank you for the links Bigwull.  I couldn't see the final sale price for the last link that you listed, it was also 7 years ago (I am not sure it that makes much difference in regards to the value of porcelain items....)  I didn't include the dimensions in my post, which I should have.  The picture is deceiving, this is very large at 24 inches tall.   Thanks!

Antique Questions Forum / Bonn Umbrella Stand

I purchased this porcelain umbrella stand recently at an estate sale.  I have done quite a lot of research online.  I know that, based on the " 'tower mark' with 'F-A-M' over 'BONN' " (per http://www.porcelainmarksandmore.com/northrhine/poppelsdorf_2/00.php), that it was made between 1885 and 1920.  There are also handwritten numbers '1830, 245, 4753/I' on the bottom.  I understand that the numbers correspond to perhaps the location that it was made as well as the actual artist.  However, I cannot find a particular reference to shed any light trying to identify that information from these numbers.  I have looked thoroughly and have only seen maybe 2 other Bonn Umbrella stands that are similar.  I was wondering if someone could verify the above information, offer any future information and maybe supply a possible value.  I have attached a few pictures.  There are a few cracks at the top and one area that is chipped.  In the pictures it probably looks like the glaze is chipped on a spot at the bottom. I think that it is wall paint that has rubbed off of the wall, onto the finish.  I am afraid to scrub hard enough to remove it.  Please let me know if I can supply any further information.  Thank you for your help!
