Antique Questions Forum / appraisal of 200 year old bass

PLEASE HELP!!!
I have a VERY old 3 string bass upright that has been in the family for a very long time.
Although we think it was made in Germany, we can't be sure.
I was told to take a picture of the "Scroll".
They say that this is a "finger-print" of who may have made it.
I need to find out it's value, so I can insure it.
Can any body help me with this.
I have a digital camera, so I can send pictures of it.
