Antique Questions Forum / Re: Credenza/Buffet - era?
« on: November 16, 2014, 07:41:49 am »
So I'm located in about an hr south of DC. And in close proximity to Virginia as well. Yes this is from a local antique store. Like I mentioned earlier there are not a lot of antique stores in my area but I am willing to drive an hour or two to find something cheaper. I need to do some research. I don't think there is much room for negotiation with these folks but like the pictures show the piece is in need of some work.

Mart you are awesome! I always get some good advice from you guys on this forum! I definitely think it is priced a bit high but the problem is that in our area it's hard to find antique furniture like this. So people buy estates and parcel it out. Not sure how much room I have to negotiate but I don't want to pay double if I can drive to Virginia which is only an hour or two away and get this piece in better shape for cheaper! Any advice on how to negotiate with sellers?

Thinking of purchasing this credenza to use as a tv stand. I love the detail and the style. Can someone tell me what era they think it's from? And the seller is asking $225.00 which includes painting (antique white) so not sure if that's reasonable...  Note it is on wheels.

Thanks Rauville! I wanted to use it as a dresser but I don't think it's got a lot of room for that sort of use. It's definitely a cool & unique piece!

Looking at purchasing this piece which was part of an estate sale from a local congressman. Any clue as how old it could be? They are asking $350.00 which I think is a bit high but wanted some opinions from folks who know more about these items

Hey Frogpatch - thanks for responding! So crud seems to be either calcium or rust (most likely calcium I think - the seller has restored a few of these and he told me it was calcium). It's definitely white and has come off with a wire brush however, I tried CLR with no avail. Looks like a brush is the only thing taking it off at this point.

So I acquired an old ice chest a few months ago and in the process of restoring it. I'm trying to focus on the inside first which is clearly in need of some TLC. It's in pretty rough shape so I've been buffing out the crud with a wool pad on the end of a drill. Does anyone have any suggestions to get through this faster? It's fairly time consuming which I'm ok with however I wanted to ask you experts if there's another way to get this cleaned up that is less labor intensive. Someone mentioned using a paint stripper but not sure that will work as it's not paint. The first picture shows what it looks like when I got it. The next one is just a closer view of the build up.

Thoughts?

Thanks Mart ;D I really do like it and haven't seen one like it. I like to keep things as close as possible to the original way that they were. So I probably won't do a lot of work to it.

Thanks! Someone is selling it for 150.00 which I'm not sure if that's a good deal or not. But I love it :)

Interested in thoughts on the attached dresser... Possible time period, etc. It's solid oak and has no markings.

Antique Questions Forum / Metal Ice Chest - make and year?

I think this is a King Metal Ice Chest maybe 1910? Anyone know the year so I can get some replacement parts to start restoring it? Thanks!!

I have a piece of children's furniture that has been painted and re-painted blue and pink throughout the years. Was this a common practice for a specific time or country? I believe this piece of furniture is circa 1830s-1850s. Trying to research it but having no luck.

Thanks,
Becky

Thanks everyone for your inputs and expertise. Without knowing the original owner it's tough to get the story behind things.

Got it! When I said research I was hoping to find someone who may have something similar to the time but this looks like a one of a kind. Regardless I am happy with my find and it will make a great bench for our sunroom. Thanks to all for your input :)
