Antique Questions Forum / Please help identify this very old ceramic fireplace/heater

A friend found it.  We think it's 19th century but possibly older.  But since this item is not something we ordinarily deal in,  we're hoping you can clear that up for us.
Can anyone tell us what name is usually associated with an item of this kind?  Was it used as a heater or a fireplace or both?
