I would have grabbed a few too if I had saw it since it costs only a dollar and every single piece of antique looks stunning anyway. You could try looking up on the Internet for similar images and from there you could derive with some info to its origins for similar designs and creations.

Sterling silver is easy to notice by its stamp. If you are able to make out a word that says so, then I reckon it has to be it. It could probably, like you said, plated or gold washed which could have caused the fading or staining of the word stamp.

Thanks Mat for the clarification. I guess when it comes to antiques, you really need to do a lot of research and reading up before deriving with some factual data. There could be a lot of work needed but overall the efforts would pay off when you have fun along the way uncovering the truth.

Antique Questions Forum / Re: Antiques or not?

Nowadays, people refer to something ‘old’ as ‘antique’. There is a indeed a significant difference between what is old and what is antique. An antique is desired not only because it is old but because of its rarity, beauty, design and uniqueness. Otherwise, it will just be referred to as used. Many of the antique silver jewelry that I see on the market are neither unique nor rare. I would suggest that people do their due diligence on research before buying anything ‘antique’ in the case of silver jewelry.

I have never seen such old odometer, but such instrument is truly useful when finding an alternative route. It helps in optimizing routes in areas to save time and become more efficient. Postal systems and courier services would use this. I think GPS systems, which we commonly use now, would use such technology. Not sure, but GPS systems would always optimize the best route for you.

Thanks for sharing your findings with us here. I had some silver flatware too few years back but they are up in storage. After reading your post, now I am curious to know the origins of my purchase too which includes some beautiful antique pieces too. Some historical facts could sometimes be really fascinating and educational at the same time.

I think a picture is required here, or perhaps it got removed somehow? Apologies, I'm rather new to the forum and still trying to work my way around things. But just my 2 cents on antique hairbrushes. It really depends on what the material was that the hair brush is made from. It could possibly be part of a collection of antique jewellery that might make it more valuable.

While it is a very pretty design, I'm really going to have to agree. There's just not enough aging on it for it to be antique silver. But of course it would be best to run a few more tests on it if you want to be sure. Bring it to an antiquity shop or something and ask them for their opinion if you have time to run down to one.
