Antique Questions Forum / Re: Mammoth ivory carvings from Alaska?

I should correct what I had origionally said to my great-grandfather not grandfather. My father was named Henry, His father was Max and his father was Henry. I am not sure on the date of his birth, not even sure where I would find out that information but with the Boas tailor shop there being part of the Skagway museum I should be able to find out. I'll see if I can search it out.

Thanks Mart,

The cup is metal actually.

The little forks are plastic now that I really look at them, rest is bone/tusk material.

Hi again,

You guys are great! It's neat finding out what some fo the things are that I have seen kicking around for my life.

These little carvings my father had told me my grandfather had gotten up in Alaska during his time there. He had gone up during the gold rush. Of course his or my memory could be wrong and they could theoretically be from anywhere but that is my recollection.

The crib board is damaged sadly the piece where the pegs should go got broken off not that long ago, the picture doesnt' show it well but to me it's a skrimshaw walrus tusk, don't know any more than that. The other item with it was with the carvings and says china on the bottom; I am assuming it to just be a cheap trinket but the rest I think is legit.

Any info/thoughts would be appreciated, thanks!

Hi cogar here is a picture of the bottom on a sheet that is in inches.

Thanks Rauville! Good one! Looks like an almost exact match! Worth more than I would have guessed.

This item came to mind for this thread as well. I am not sure if it is in any way tied to the other items but I thought to include it here in case it was as the other pertinent information was already posted in this thread.

Thanks for all the input thus far!

Here is the Wedgewood set.

You'll have to excuse my terms for the items if they are wrong. I have no idea just guessing.

10 teacups
8 normal sized saucers and 2 slightly larger saucers
7 desert plates? and 2 slightly smaller desert plates
8 small bowls
8 dinner plates
2 serving platters
2 long concave dishes
1 double handed dish with lid

I added the last picture just because there is a teapot and sugar bowl of the royal charter that might have been used with this set if the origional teapot broke? No Wedgewood teapot anyway.

It is in near perfect condition.

I doubt I'll sell it but very glad to know roughly what it is worth if I wanted too.

Polishing the brass won't lower the value will it? I ask because I know for some things it certainly would.I have the tools to do so easily and it would look neat all polished up? I also have too many projects to ever get around to it but I'm curious now if that would detract from it's value.

My thanks

First two pics are 1 lamp, second two pics are the 2nd lamp.

The 2nd lamp the wire is just tied to the top, sorry for the confusion. Was hard to get a pic of it as it is in behind a bunch of stuff.

The 1st lamp the wire just comes straight out of the center of the base underneath. The plug has been replaced it looks like but still has no ground.

Thanks for your thoughts Mart! Seems quite a few of my grandparents things are from the 1930's!

Thanks alot everyone. Great to see it is a piece with some history and a bit of allure.

It occured to me that these lamps may be of similar origin as they are brass and the one has the 'onyx' stone in the base as well. Anyone familiar with these lamps, are they from the same era/maker perhaps?

I only know it has had these stone inserts as long as I've known but I've only been alive 44 years! So it easily could have been replaced at any time in it's history.

Hi again everyone,

Thanks kindly for your previous help.

I also inherited this bronze stand that was very coveted by the family so I thought to see if anyone had any input on it. I don't see any markings on it.

Hi Pelady,

Thanks for the response. I haven't done a google search for the plate or cup but I will try and figure out how to do that. Looking through random pictures of China I haven't seen the pattern anywhere yet. I do really like the pattern myself.

If it was worth alot I would sell it but if it isn't I'll just keep it. Sadly I do need $$ so the more my things are worth the more likely I am to sell them at this point in time. A shame but it is what it is for me currently.

I have 2 decent sized plates, 11 saucers, 12 dessert plates, 8 tea cups, the creamer dish and a sugar bowl. I imagine it should have had a teapot but alas I do not have that.

I do have a couple other full sets that I will be selling for sure, perhaps I should post those as well? They are stamped with royal majestic fine china d'or. Somerset by NL excel? and wedgewood bone china made in england, doric.

I also have 5 or 10 assorted old china plates with different manufacturers on them, Be glad to post them if anyone had any input on them. I just don't want to go post crazy on here unless people are interested.

Hey thanks Mart!

Now that I look closer I see three different patterns to the main part of the plates.

Thanks for teaching me what transferware is!
