Antique Questions Forum / Splitting Mahogany Bookcase Questions
« on: December 06, 2007, 03:01:02 pm »
Hi,

I am interested in purchasing a Mahogany bookcase, it has a step back glazed top, the bottom has a venered crotch mahogany drawer and well as paneled doors that are also venered crotch mahogany and the case/crown of the bookcase is solid mahogany. It appears to be the original finish, defiantly has the original glass and is a little over 6 ft high. I don't know the age but I would says late 1800's to early 1900's.

The issue I have is the solid mahogany sides have splitting in 2 spots on the one side and have actually bucked slightly outward. I personally am not put off by the look of the splits but I am wondering how much something like this affects the value of the piece. It is priced at $1650 and I have talk it down to $1450. At that price is it still a good investment? I though $1650 was a bargain before i noticed the splitting, I have seen similar pieces of furniture for $3200.
