Antique Questions Forum / Re: translation of chinese characters
« on: January 07, 2009, 09:36:31 pm »
The first character on the side means "shi" (shi fu) which is one of the characters in the word master or teacher. The second character we don't recognize. Both are written in complicated old style characters (not the modern simplified ones). The bottom characters are in fact not characters at all but Buddhist symbols.

What material is this? Brass? Hard to see from the photos. Can you post some larger close up photo of the side or the bottom?  Also, where did you purchase this?

My feeling is this is probably genuine (though I really know very little about swords).

Here are two reproduction Chinese swords for comparison's sake:

See these all the time in temples here. Used for lots of things but most commonly as oil lamps (wick floats in the oil). Made for export or domestic. I could be wrong but that's my guess.

Actually this looks more Korean judging by the ornate hardware, though these are found in China as well. Should be a reproduction. I have seen them around a few times in my travels. Hard to say more without much larger photos.

The other two characters seem to be a person's name (though not sure on this one).

The writing on the sword says "18th year of the of 9th month of the "Zhao He" period." The Chinese characters are complicated not modern style simplified characters.

Photos are too small to see if these are authentic Chinese porcelain. Need much larger photos, including of the bottoms.
