Antique Questions Forum / Re: Antique Coffee Table or Reproduction?

Whoops, didn't notice the damage :P Yes, KC's value is quite right. Without damage I would think around $85-95 on average (like Craigslist sale), too bad it has condition problems :(

An appropriate value would be around $75-$85 depending on the place of sale, I think. However, it could be a little higher (max $150 I think).

Antique Questions Forum / Re: Victorian? Vanity Set. Any ideas?

I don't think it's silver, the tone is not quite right. Perhaps a pewter-type metal or silverplate. I definitely think it is from the early 1900s or perhaps late 19th century. Are the spines of the comb ivory (not the brush)?

Hm, looks like painted bronze. I like the incense idea, but not sure.

St3fan, you might find this site interesting: www.liveauctioneers .com

Usually I get values for books from there, as it actually shows the prices (after signing up for free) that things have sold for recently. Unfortunately, I didn't find either of your books, but since they're law books I guessed a few hundred a piece of ebay. Skinny's estimate is probably much more accurate, but a lot of sellers on abe have really inflated prices.

Good luck with whatever else you might find!

I had such similar ambitions, Hosman. I guess that's life though- you never really know where you are gonna end up  ;)

Nice books, good condition. Both volumes are worth a few hundred dollars a piece, and I believe both bindings are the originals. They are similar to 17th century books I have.

Hey Tales, he actually works mainly in ocean archaeology (especially sunken architecture), but he works "on land" as well. Kind of interesting, we didn't know each well until about six months ago when we reconnected at my grandmother's funeral. He's a really interesting guy, I might "rope" him into this forum sometime if I can  ;)

Okay, hey all! I showed a picture of this piece to my cousin who is an archaeologist (currently working in Ukraine, but he has been to the Middle East on a number of occasions, and once to Egypt while getting his doctorate). Anyway, he believes the piece might be Egyptian revival, but he doesn't think it was made in Egypt to sell to tourists (like most reproductions coming out of the country are), and he doesn't think the work is ancient.

That's just one opinion, and as always, treat it with a grain of salt. The best thing to do would be to contact the museum Tales gave you the info for. I might also add that if this was an authentic piece I do not believe it would be so bulbous in places- even if they were mass produced.

The piece just seems a little too big for a charm bracelet, doesn't it? I'm definitely no expert when it comes to jewelry though...

Would not have guessed modern! Interesting piece- I believe your glasses come in all different colors, ironlord.

What a nice doll, Tales! I'll be sure to keep my eye out for similar ones. Unfortunately, it's so hard to come across authentic antiques in China :(

It is interesting that there is glaze on the base of the piece. I wonder if it covered up the artist's initials.

The desk is a "kidney desk" (note the shape of the top). I personally wouldn't be surprised if it was 80 years old. As for the rest, I have no clue. Are there any markings on the porcelain?

That's SO interesting, Tales! How cool! Surprising, as well, considering a fully preserved mummy would bring far more at auction than simply the coffins.

As far as the pot, the face seems to have more oriental features than Egyptian, although the hat is definitely not Asian from what I can tell. The craftsmanship is also much different than an Egyptian or Chinese counterpart. I'm still thinking this was just someone's ceramics project- are there any initials?
