Using 'English' spelling strzec means guard, protect, observe and beware. As there is an accent over the second z in the word it's possible that it is pronounced with a 'c' sound…….. spelling it strzez brought no results

I knew them as train cases, late 60's early 70's. Think the maker is Cheney rather than Chaney.

In the closeup pic of the child, when enlarged…….does that look more like a burlap type weave? A coarser 'thread' and much larger/uneven spacing than canvas?

Mart, do you think that it could possibly be egg tempera that was used. Was doing a quick search trying to find similar subjects and came across a site that sells Russian icons. One that was vaguely similar (plus several others) are described as using egg tempera. On reading up on the tempera it is mentioned that it needed to be applied to a stiff backing (such as wood) and using it on canvas would cause crackling and pieces of the paint to fall off.

Certainly has an Orthodox appearance to the painting/backing. Would love to see this in daylight.

Wondering if the beads were added later, over a period of time, to disguise the gradual deterioration of the painting?

I was raised with punctuation marks to emphasize (old school)   Yup, same here

Awww come on Ipcress !! I have done that for so many years that if I stopped,,,they would send the coroner to my house !! 

I do believe if some of us laid off those 'extra' keys no one would believe it was really us posting. I find it puts a bit more personality and life into the words being read. Not to mention it's a lifelong habit that to stop would have me forever deleting and losing track of what I was saying.

Not having seen the original posts, only catching up along the way, I must add that I actually had to google to find where the offence was taken. Quite honestly, I grew up with a proper, Victorian mother and a rather reserved father………yet 'that' word and others that some may find off-putting……did not raise the same response that they would in other areas of the continent. Were I a Newf or a Caper, rather than a Bluenoser,  I'm sure my vocabulary would be even more colourful……..and quite likely, highly censored or completely misunderstood.

Don`t think I will complain anymore after seeing that Sapphire !!  Cuddle up and thaw out,, a hot toddy works wonders !!

Should have taken pics at work today of the inside of our garden centre……might as well have been outside with the snow that managed to get in.  Out shovelling and sanding three times there and no heat in our work/loading area. Just a treat when the bay door is open…….NOT. Came home, dropped my bags and picked up the leash for another go 'round the yard. Even the dufus has enough sense (most times) to 'do it' and get back in.  Supper tonight……passed up on the turkey and veggies, even the lasagna (all which I would only have to heat up) and went for French toast made with homemade raisin bread, drowned in NS maple syrup………absolutely one of the best things to make you forget how miserable it is outside
