Need help identifying ancient stoneware "pot"
« on: November 22, 2011, 01:10:05 am »
I found this old stoneware pot but it is unlike anything I've seen.  I'm trying to figure out what to even call it.  It has a handle shaped like a tea pot spout.  Maybe some kind of dipper but no clue what for.  It's brown, and cracked, but I refuse to pitch it until my curiosity is satisfied that it's not something special.  It looks ancient to me.. not just antique, but I'm no expert.  Stoneware.. earthenware.. some form of pottery.  Please help me identify what it is and perhaps an idea of when it dates back to.  Pictures are located here..

Thanks in advance!

To me, it looks like an "one handled bean pot" with albany slip finish. Maybe a "lunch hour piece" by a worker? What size is it?

Does look like a New England bean pot !! That glaze is pretty typical of the ones I have seen !!  These are used with wood fires so that could account for the older than it looks condition !! Although it is not new and looks antique I don`t think it in the "ancient" catagory yet !!

Here is another link... maybe it will work.  http://s1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee444/cc4npg/old%20pot/

If it's a bean pot, it's unlike anything I've ever seen.  Someone on another site said the glazing looks primitive and said it might be a pot dating back to the 19th century used to store something in, or a ramekin.  I understand fire will make a pot look older, and I've already considered that, but this handle really has me baffled.  Here are dimensions...

Mouth opening 4" inner; 5" outer
Height looks to be about 6 3/4"
Handle is about 4" long and crudely made.. it does not look to be made by any machine
The widest part of the pot looks like somewhere in the neighborhood of 7 1/2"

There are imperfections to the roundness of the pot.  Either it was poorly made on a wheel... or it was more likely made by hand.  Still, the rim of the pot is fairly precisely made so the person (if made by hand) would have used some type of tool to do that.
