Comliments of Chase & Sanborn
« on: January 17, 2012, 12:16:53 pm »
I think this is an older repro but since I can't find an older repro or an original to compare I have no way of knowing. I know the modern reproductions I have found do not have the written description of the scene like mine does at the bottom. It measures 21.5" tall and 20" wide and its on cardboard. Anyone ever see one of these before?

Hey KevinB ... I just did a quick web-search with the term(s) : Chase & Sandborn "New England Grocery" print & came up with a few items like yours (some were priced @ $200 - $450) .... perhaps you could check that out ...

Also found one purported to be from 1908 , as an 'advertising puzzle' (die-cut) .

I was able to find those also but it kind of bugs me that they dont have the text down at the bottom like this one. I'm not sure if its the artists description of the scene or if its something made up by someone in advertising.

The original litho was done by Abbot and Graves in 1897 !! I checked two auction houses and neither original had the paragraphs on the bottom !! It is likely that the coffee company reproduced this lithograph more than once as it was used between 1900 and 1949 !! What does it say at the bottom ?? Both places I checked gave a estimate of $275. Even if later yours should be around $100.  Didn`t see any of these actually selling !!

No need to read it all !!  The first paragraph tells that this was all added later than the original litho. because it is describing the scene and explaining it !! The first copies that Chase and Sanborn used only had Compliments of Chase and Sanborn below the picture !!  I would guess your version is from the 20`s or 30`s !! But its only my best guess !!
