Old Glass Gasoline jar
« on: January 28, 2012, 03:38:43 pm »
Hi folks, been awhile, missed ya'll! found this today and thought it was too cool for words and wanted to find out what it might be worth. Its a glass jar they used to sell gasoline in, came from an old pharmacy in Wisconsin. Im guessing its early 1900's but not sure, just wondering if anyone knows how old it as and if theres any value to it, i paid $65 so Im hopin that isnt too bad. Researched it as best I could but couldnt come up with anything other than it predates gas stations. Thanks in advance!

That's quite a piece of history. Before the advent of the automobile you would buy gasoline from your druggist to kill lice.

Thats so cool! I never would have imagined it was actually prescribed, and for lice no less. I think I heard that joke about gasoline, matches and an ice pick for curing crabs lol, maybe thats where the joke came from. Thanks Rauville, did I pay a decent price?

LOL !!  Even the thought of that hurts !!  Never heard of gas for lice !!  Here in Texas I think the lye soap was so strong it would kill anything that crawled !!

I hadn't heard of the treatment either, until years ago when I purchased an oak "Label Dispenser Case" at the auction of an old drug store. The case was full of rolls of gummed labels to put on prepared medications. One of the labels stated: "Gasoline, Apply to infested areas of scalp, Stay clear of flame...".
