Maybe this will help us a bit. Flipped and fiddled to get a bit more clarity.  ;)

Could you tell us the dimensions of the door and also provide some more pics of details (carving, paint) and construction (joins, hinges, etc.) Where was this purchased?

For some reason, if it's the size I'm imagining, I'm seeing it come from the altar area of an Eastern (possibly Orthodox) church ::)

I tend to agree Sapphire !! But now that I can see it,, its odd that there is nothing in the decoration, (that I can see, that is ) that appears to be of a religious nature !! Of course this it totally out of my area of minimal expertise !!

That just came to mind as I was recently at a Lebanese wedding (Orthodox) and was totally fascinated with the front of the church. Wish I had been able to take some pictures of it (or rather, wish I had thought to)

The hinges appear too small for an actual door and the frame looks to be complete on all sides, giving the impression this enclosed some sort of 'cabinet'. Unless it was for a window  ???

wendy, I think those are hinges across from the 'cross pieces' in the panels. Also appears to be a small latch of some sort midway up the center (green strip).

Would still like to see the dimensions of this.  Might help put it into perspective!

I agree with Wendy's comment that there ought to be some provenance from the museum on this piece. She's a beauty, but I would ask for paperwork to back up her credentials.  ;)

dimensions are 46 inch wide by 77 inch high. we didn't get the papers we got it from a person that got it from the museum we have the crate that it came in from the museum. its not in perfect shape but in great shape. the story we got. is that it was from the eastern era. and was from in the palace in the religious room.

Agree mart! The museum should have records of when it was taken in and any history & when it was sold.
