What is it made of ??  Looks like a clay of some sort !! If so is it on any kind of a base ??  Maybe bamboo or wood base with clay on top !!

It is made off wood and looks indeed like a clay brushd over . So looks like it had his age .

My wife collects mask from all over the world. She said it most closely resembles one of her masks from the Ivory Coast. She said the base is probably wood cut from a large hollowed out knot in a tree.

I'm curious how old the beads are too but I would imagine alot of materials are might get recycled to make masks and other decorative things. The rope is made of Jute which is a plant fiber that could be found in alot of places around the world. A coastal city or town would have alot of access to old ropes made of jute. The jute rope was her first clue for the ivory coast since it was used alot there.

Might be kind of hard to date !! I read a bit on one of the African art and craft sites and it said they are still being made all over the area !!

The materials look old but you would really need an expert to look at it to make sure its not just made from older materials.

Nice site you have send .But even with a magnefying glass it looks like old dirt and or very well pretented to be old or this is really old . And  i do have some experience with Japanese and Chinese porcelain and there very good in even imitating like Kangxi andd many other styles . Most off this comes from Malesia and Indonesia . So I need a expert who will need to hold en see it I think .
