Sikes Furniture
« on: December 18, 2014, 01:14:58 pm »
I just came across a hutch made by the Sikes Furniture Company out of Buffalo, NY. To me it is a local piece and very cool. I have it as a display piece right now in my store but I have no idea were to start on a price. Hutches in this area are a hard sell. I do not mind delivering or even shipping. I just don't know what to ask. I don't want to look like a fool and ask $100 or ask way more than I should. Here are some pics.

From my reading, the Sikes Company ceased operation in 1956, so your hutch would date prior to that. There is a Sikes family history site that contains many examples of their furniture. The following page has a hutch similar to yours pictured (RH side), along with a note that the pieces were acquired from the Sikes company in the 1950-55 time period. http://sikes-sykesfamilies.rootsweb.com/chairs-4.htm
In my opinion the value could be in the $300 - 500 range?  ???

Mart, I live in Buffalo, NY. I paid $300 for the contents of a Doctors house in Niagara Falls. It was full of Heywood Wakefield pieces. 2 Bedroom sets 4 end tables and 2 coffee tables. Also got This hutch 8 Sikes chairs 2 Sikes End Tables 1 Sikes Coffee Table and 1 Sikes Dinner Table. Plus all the other stuff that didn't sell at the estate sale. All in all not a bad haul. I was just stuck on this Hutch.

Wow !!  Sounds like you made a haul with that purchase !! Not that sure how the market is in your area but in mine you would do well to get $200. for the hutch !! Problem is the style !! Most consider it too outdated to fit in todays homes and with todays furniture !! Its not old enough to be collectable and is a mass produced piece !!  But,,if I were you I would use it as you are, stick a price that your customers would be comfortable with and wait and see what happens !! If it doesn`t sell in a reasonable time frame,,turn it into a bar !!

Did anyone know where I can buy a brown wooden antique swing chair, which is also known as a haunted chair in most horror movies :D I usually bought furniture from Coupon Codify but they don't have antique furniture, let me know if you know any stores.

Your hutch would predate 1956, when the Sikes Company declared bankruptcy, according to what I've read. Numerous illustrations of their furniture may be found on a Sikes family history website. Please check and try https://www.keahardware.com/product/drawer-slide-system A picture of a hutch like yours is shown on the following page (right-hand side), along with a notation that the furniture was purchased from the Sikes firm between 1950 and 1955. The worth, in my opinion, might fall between $300 and $500.
