Caned Chair How old ?
« on: June 16, 2012, 07:09:40 pm »
This is another rescued chair. The caning was beautiful until the hole. The problem was the house has been standing empty so long that pigeons got in. Only in San Marco Square do people love pigeons! ;D There are two more chairs, but I don't think we can save the one. Pigeon poo stains wood and anything it touches!

The chair looks to be 20`s country style furniture !!  Straight back,, little ornamentation !!  However,, it was hand caned and would be difficult to rework !!  Not impossible,, but take my word for it,, it is not something that is fun to do !! But if you want the experience of learning hand caning,, it a perfect candidate !!

Not that much !! Chair in excellent condition about $45.  Hand caning is not cheap !! You would lose money !!

If you love the chair then it's worth it!  It may cost $50-$100 to have it recaned, depending on where you live.

A very handsome chair IMO.

I once caned such a chair and Mart is right, it is a tedious operation, kinda like quilting, but something to do that can be frustrating until you “get-the-hang-of-it”.

If you really like the chair you could get someone to route out a “channel” across the top of the “holes” and install a pre-caned “mat” with a spine or purchase one of those pressed fiber “seat bottoms” and nail it down with the “decorative” upholstery tacks.

Both are pictured here:

Thanks! I'll maybe save that job for the winter. Wait till you see the other odd chair. It looks like a wooden seashore chair or something.
