Farberware hammered platter?
« on: July 01, 2012, 06:26:00 pm »
Not sure if that is the correct way to describe this platter but doing my best  LOL

It is very interesting and I have found a number of these but not this one in particular.  I have no clue on how to describe this or what date range this comes from.

Also I am thinking there won't be a whole lot of value as there is a lot of crazing that is very apparent.  Still a pretty piece and interesting.

Any information is helpful.

Thanks for the patience for my lack of vintage and antique vocabulary and my lack of photographic skills   ::)

Well, Its engraved or impressed aluminum and aluminum was quite popular 30`s through 50`s !! But I have never seen a platter like yours that is over a plate of sorts ?? Does the metal part come off ?? Or is it made in one piece ??

Hi Mart,  Yes it is all one piece.  I did some googling and found others similar and they said hammered aluminum I believe.  I don't think this one will have much value with all the crazing and the ones I did find were listed anywhere from $15 up.  There are several on Ebay.  I just think it is so different   :)

I would keep it a while !!  I have some hammered aluminum cookware and have noticed that prices on it are going up !!  I can`t see the hammered look on your pic ,, can just see the impressed flowers !!

Hi Mart,  I see what you mean and I have attached a few more pics.  I think what I am seeing are hammered marks?  If not, it does say "wrought" on the back.

Thanks for your help   8)

If you google "wrought aluminum farberware platter" you will see LOTS of them pop up!  Unfortunately, they are not rare or in HIGH demand....however, they are still loved and collected by some.

Thanks KC - yes I see that.  This one is also crazed pretty badly.  For me honestly, if I have boxes and boxes of things that I am going through and can't possibly keep everything, just learning about this stuff and even making a few dollars on Ebay once in a while is good enough for me.   ;D

Mart, unfortunately, alot of aluminum items are not soaring in pricing once the scare of aluminum getting into human "body systems" and linked to Alzheimer and breast cancer/cancers came about.  Once studies come out disputing that you will see prices go up some.

Even tho the scare has been linked more to pots/pans and deodorant....people have been avoiding aluminum in food service all over.

Had not heard anything about that !!  Lord, when I was growing up almost everything I ate was cooked in something they are afraid of now !!  My grandmother used almost all cast aluminum or cast iron !! Grandmother lived to the age of 102 and Granddad was 97 !!  Guess no one told them it was bad for you !!

I retired my moms pressure cooker (my favorite) because of pitting - that is when it gets into the food.  But still use it for other things!!!
